TLARWise Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 My school has recently changed over to SIMS so this is all new to me. I have just started to have a play around with SIMS Discover. Our original plan was for all staff to learn how to use it however from what I can work out the only way for Discover to run correctly is to completely disable UAC and give the user local admin rights to the computer. I am not very thrilled about doing this, does anyone know if there is a way to run Discover without having to give all staff local admin rights to all computers? Does anyone know if anything is being done Capitas end to allow the use of Discover without needing such high level user access?
Cache Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 We definitely don't have to do anything like that to make Discover work. We push it out through Solus 3 and it just works regardless of what local permissions the user has.
Sheridan Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 Same here, deployed with solus3 using the firewall settings specified by capita and it works OK.
timbo343 Posted April 25, 2016 Posted April 25, 2016 Local admin use, really?? We run it too with restricted users, no problems with our site. In fact, i have more problems with Solus3 than i do with discover.
TLARWise Posted April 26, 2016 Author Posted April 26, 2016 That is strange, what OS are you using, we are on Win 8.1. When I try opening Discover on one of our teacher users (using the icon on the SIMS toolbar) a logon box comes up with a message underneath saying 'An unknown error has occured'. The only way to open Discover without this error is to disable UAC and give the teacher local admin access.

I was getting this error becuase Discovery wasn't given the SQL port number like SIMS picks from the connect.ini. Discover then goes about trying every port it can before giving up. Maybe something to look at? Here's my notes on it: Had to edit the following config file, putting the port number in the SQL path. C:\ProgramData\Discover\Discover.Designer.Desktop. exe.local.config

Where did you locate the port number (65040) in case my setup is using a different port number (no port numbers are listed in my connect.ini file). Thanks

I'm not sure why it would matter about the UAC but was worth a try as the error was the same as ours.

Cache Posted April 27, 2016 Posted April 27, 2016 We're on Windows 7, I have a Windows 8 machine I can quickly push discover out to to test it but I won't be back where that machine is until Friday. I will test it though as I can't image Discover, one of the newer products, requiring such massive permissions especially if it works that way on 7.
Bankesy Posted April 27, 2016 Posted April 27, 2016 Hello Does Discover work when it's launched by itself? (not from within SIMS). The only problem I ever had with Discover was the need to push out the deployment twice before a PC would pick it up (Start Menu>SIMS Applications>Discover)

The only problem I ever had with Discover was the need to push out the deployment twice before a PC would pick it up (Start Menu>SIMS Applications>Discover) There is no difference whether I use the toolbar icon from within SIMS or the standalone shortcut (other than having to manually type in login details before the error comes up).
Cache Posted April 27, 2016 Posted April 27, 2016 Are you pushing out Discover through Solus3 currently then or are you manually installing? It may be worth downloading the latest ISO and manually installing it on a client and configuring it to see whether it works or not (if you are installing from Solus3 that is).
TLARWise Posted April 28, 2016 Author Posted April 28, 2016 I have now tried both manual install and solus3 install on one of our domain computers with no change. My next step was to create a Win8.1 VM from scratch. I installed Discover straight away after the install completed and created a standard user (non domain and non admin) and when I logged on as the standard user Discover worked fine (UAC was enabled at default level). I then joined it to the domain and it still worked fine, including when logging in as a limited teacher domain user. I have also had a look at the folder permissions but can't see anything obvious that would block Discover. I am now in the process of installing all windows updates and then I will install all the apps we use on our domain computers to see if there is something there that may be interfering with Discover.
