Impero and Microsoft Edge / Windows 10

We've just rolled out our first suite of Windows 10 desktops, resplendent with Microsoft's shiny new Edge browser. We run Impero on all student machines, so duly installed the client on these new machines which all went smoothly.

 

Watching a class of students on day 2 and we noticed some of them on YouTube despite it being blocked by Impero under the "Blocked Websites" block group. Investigating a bit further, there appears to be no support for Add-Ons for Edge currently, so we're assuming no Impero interception on Edge ??

 

We could just use a windows title block, but this will only stop access to the full youTube site and not any embedded videos found elsewhere - so less than ideal. We could also block access to Edge via AppLocker until Impero have a solution - forcing users back onto ie11, also less than ideal.

 

Just wondered if any other schools have encountered this and how they are tackling it ??

Could you block YouTube for students on your proxy server / webfilter?

That's how we used to do it, but we found that using Impero provided a more granular approach as we could just unblock it for a single suite rather than all or nothing at the content filter level.

 

I've managed to get through to Impero this afternoon, and spoke to them, apparently add-on support for Edge has just been released and they are working on a plug-in. No ETA as yet, but their advice is to put in a caption block for Edge for the time being to force users back onto ie11 until the new plugin is released.

The plan for our rollout is no edge, just ie11 and Chrome for now.

 

Once impero sort themselves out we will evaluate and decide from then.

For the record I work for NetSupport, we have been working closely with Microsoft Redmond to provide support for Windows 10, we have created a universal Windows program (UWP) and also we have full support for Edge - when we spoke to Microsoft about monitoring and restricting access to websites on Edge they said it was not possible in the original release, the new extensions may help but at NetSupport we have worked out a way to do it - PM me if you want more information.

Would blocking Edge for students, allowing them access to Internet Explorer, and Chrome on Windows 10 help until you can find a better approach?

Hi DaveP, with NetSupport we block the website at a lower level so it would not matter what browser the student was using, if you block a website it is blocked for IE, Edge, Chrome, Safari etc. (If you wanted to block the 'application' Edge you could also do that and that would allow students access through other browsers - it's completely flexible and would do as required.
