Hello People,

I am wondering if anyone can help me. I have created a new install of Smoothwall, and I have confiured this setup to authenticate users with AD. I have also enabled on the block page for it to display the computers host name, but for some reason instead of the host name being displayed it just gives me the IP address of the device. Can someone point me into the right direction of what to set the DNS settings to on Smoothwall in an Active Directory environment.

Thanks for reading, I will look forward to the replies.

Set System DNS resolver to use the system internal DNS server.

Set the DNS forwarders to google's DNS servers 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4.

Set the Conditional DNS forwarders to your AD DNS server or servers.

Hello Again Ausy,

Thanks again for your reply. I have now set Smoothwall to use its internal DNS server, I have created 2 DNS forwarders to Google DNS, and I set the conditional DNS forwarder to the IP of my DC, it asked for a domain box so I put mydomain.internal. Is this correct?

Thanks

James

Yes that's correct. the domain should be your AD domain.

Sorry to drag this old thread up but I am having this exact issue on Leeds-12. I've set the settings above but I'm still getting IP addresses and not hostnames. The smoothwall is on another subnet and the actual computers are using the AD Domain Controllers as the DNS servers.

One more thing to add for reverse lookup to work. In the conditional forwarders section(networking - configuration - DNS) you will need to add the reverse lookup to the conditional forwarder pointing to your AD DNS. If you internal subnets are all in 192.168.0.0/16 for example, you will need to add an entry like this to the domains field.

myad.domain

168.192.in-addr.arpa

And then save the setting. The in-addr.arpa entry is subnet reversed and the in-addr.arpa at the end. So for a 10.20.9.0/24 subnet the entry would be 9.20.10.in-addr.arpa

Once done, go to system - diagnostics - ip tools and try to ping an IP address there. When you do (and there's a hostname associated with that IP) the lookup should show a hostnamer before the pings, otherwise it will state - no reverse lookup found.
