We use Smoothwall for our VPN tunnel....Before this we used Server 2012 R2

 

DirectAccess would be worth looking at.

How do you set up a VPN tunnel on server 2012? And is it secure ?

If your asking the questions then I strongly recommend avoiding VPN.

 

A VPN is a very dangerous thing unless you understand the security implications it can pose.

 

The connecting clients will need to be secured and protected as good or better than your internal machines, they will need to be prevented from running anything but allowed applications, authentication needs to be to the domain and those user need to have a strong password policy...

I was under the impression that VPN was a secure way to remote onto e.g server . I often have to do this and didn't want to do it via a public IP address as I feel that that would not be secure ... Open to being corrected :-)

The connection is reasonably secure if you use a strong encryption VPN.

 

It's the endpoint and users that you have to worry about. If it's just for yourself then you only have to worry about yourself.

 

But you need to ensure your endpoint is safe.
