Cant set BIOS password

Good Morning

 

We have just bought a few refurbished HP 8200 Elite SFF desktops to replace some teacher desktops but i am struggling to set a bios password.

 

It allows me to enter a password then save (by pressing F10) and exit, but on reboot does not enforce the password I just set. I have updated the bios to the latest version, reset to defaults, removed the battery, and pressed the yellow cmos button.

 

I have the same problem on 5 of the desktops.

 

Any ideas? what have i missed?

Is it saving the other settings like the time ? Possible the cmos battery is low ?

Yeah all other Settings are being saved.

I've got the same. There's a jumper that needs connecting. Most resellers leave it unplugged.

We had that with some HP recon units. The jumper was the issue with us.

I've got the same. There's a jumper that needs connecting. Most resellers leave it unplugged.

Old thread I know. But we've just got a bunch of these and got some with the same problem. That link appears to be dead now. Does anyone have the doc at all? The HP site is as useless as always. Where was the jumper on the motherboard?

When I dealt with this 3 years ago they were refurbs so I guess it's EOL time from HPs perspective. You may just have to do some testing to figure out the jumper. I may have the pdf somewhere or try https://web.archive.org or Google cache. Edited March 3, 2019 by free780

I've managed to find the original article now on HP's knowledgebase, but the image of the location on the mobo with the jumper is missing. So much for "the cloud" eh? lol

 

It really irked me over half-term when I set them up, as I thought I was going mad - but didn't get time to look into it. Edugeek to the rescue again.

 

I'll have to compare a working and non-working unit. But at least you've pointed me in another direction to look so thanks!

We have this model in most classrooms but I’ve never tried changing the bios however, there is a bios update to I think 1.45 which may help.

What spec are you running on them at? Stock or been upgraded with RAM/SSD? Do you have any issues with running Wake-on-LAN on them? I've found some to be a bit intermittent with the WoL functionality, they don't seem to properly wake up.

Got some HPs from ICT Direct with this problem, they send out some jumpers for me. Dunno why there's loads that are missing it, someone's been wiping the bios settings for resale and not replacing them

Sorry not sure of the speed but i5 with 6 or 8 MB + SSD. We got them from ICT Direct 2 years ago plus we bought a handful from the recycle company that takes our unwanted kit. I've never got WOL working even after updating the NIC drivers but it would be great if it worked. Teachers very happy with them.

Just checked and the bios version I have is 2.29 but see on the HP site the latest is 2.32 released June 2018.
