T-shirts

Has anyone in the UK bought a T-shirt from this US company before? If so, what were the postage costs and did you get stung for import duty etc?

Not that company but imported a lot before. Clothes are normally 12% duty "if" the company declares it as products rather than gift etc and seems a lot don't but obviously wouldn't rely on that. (Some also pay it as part of their shipping costs if it's a multi-country delivery e.g. UPS/FedEx but again that's the shippers choice)

 

Shipping wise it normally ends up starting about $5 for the first item, and then scales if more. (Most use UPS/FedEx)

I am weary of buying goods from America these days, I got stung with an extra £14 customs bill for my wifes Griffin iPhone case in the last few months.

I've been stung before buying a 1D t-shirt from America. £5 import tax and £10 for the privilege of sending me the letter informing me of the costs.

So if I read that correctly; if I purchase something costing £100 from the USA I would be liable for VAT but not Duty?[TABLE=width: 630]

I have bought and imported before, and almost always pay duty.

 

However I will tell a horror story - I bought my brother a print of a band tour poster (from the original designer) in October with the view of it being a Christmas present. It got across the ocean in about a week, and then disappeared into the UK postal system. I got a delivery notification in about February, but when I went to the depo it was no where to be found.

 

A couple of weeks later I got an email from the seller saying he'd received it back (totally bashed and destroyed) wanting to know what was up. Luckily he was understanding and shipped me a new print (via a private courier) at no charge. So, it took a week to get to the UK, and about 4.5 months for the UK postal service to totally foul it up. Yay.
