defragging a server 77% fragmentation!

hi. i just ran defraggler on one of our servers and it is 77% fragmented! does anyone know why this could be? the server is only a few months old and files are not changed or moved much at all. we just use it to run impero and 2 hyper vm's for remote access. also could defragging this effect anything? thanks

Have you ever run it on a new machine with windows freshly installed and all the updates applied? It's usually dreadful

that is high for a device, out of interest are your VMs running with defrag on them too ?

 

I was under the impression from what I read a long time back to turn that off on VMs and the hosts to prevent any unnecessary writes on backing up of data if your using something like veeam, though that may not be the case these days.

 

Could the VMs be doing plenty of writes on the disk if their hosted there ?

I'd defrag the vhd(x) files individually with defraggler (i've done it before when they've split into 3 or 4 pieces) but my hyper-v servers have never had fragmentation even approaching that. Do you have a lot of snapshots/checkpoints. Are you disks differencing?
