toasty Posted March 23, 2016 Posted March 23, 2016 Morning all, Got a strange thing happening on our wireless network. Mostly Apple mac computers, but not exclusively, receive an IP address which doesn't correspond to the range offered by the DHCP server ie. 169.254.*.* instead of a 172.*.*.* address. Anyone got an idea as to why this would happen? Cheers!
Steve21 Posted March 23, 2016 Posted March 23, 2016 169 addresses are issued to the client by itself when it can't get an IP address from a DHCP server. So sounds like all those devices are having issues. If it's a lot I'd check your DHCP server (or wireless controller) for errors Steve
theo_logical Posted March 23, 2016 Posted March 23, 2016 Morning Toasty 169.254.*.* is a the default IP address given usually when the system can't find any other DHCP address to assign the workstation. It could be caused by several things, Is you DHCP server running and visible to your workstations? have you got sufficient addresses in your DHCP scope?
toasty Posted March 23, 2016 Author Posted March 23, 2016 Thanks! Was sure this was the case for the 169 addresses. The DHCP scope has plenty of addresses available and is visible from the clients. I'm thinking it could be connected to the way the access points are setup, as the issues is affecting all locations, but not sure where to look, though I'm sure there there the limit of clients connecting to the APs is never exceeded.
