Went to a teachers house yesterday (own free will :p). They have a Sky BB router in the study, and that pumps out wifi to most of the house. Unfortunately, the living room isn't part of the wifi covered area.

They had a Belkin wifi extender but I tried and it just didn't want to connect to the same SSID and work.

I have suggested they look at homeplug wireless, but with the cost I don't want to say buy it if I can't be sure it works.

From what I understand, one end will go into a socket near the router, and CAT5 into the router itself. The other end will go wherever you have the weak/no signal. I'm assuming they can be used with any manufacturer for router, etc? I don't want to find they buy, for example, a netgear set and it only works with netgear routers or something along those lines.

Also one makers homepage says it supports WPA and WPA2. Does that cover WPA-PSK?

Any advice would be appreciated. They do want wireless, so a normal homeplug or networking with CAT5 is not an option.

Cheers

**EDIT**

This is the bit that concerns me on one makers site:

The dLAN Wireless extender can be integrated simply by plugging it into an existing dLAN network

Does that mean only dLAN networks are compatible?

From what I can gather dlan just refers to the network that these devices create between themselves.

So you'd leave your current wifi router where it is and connected.

Plus the dlan thingy into the router as you've said.

In the lounge plug in the wireless dlan and then configure that wirless to be the same ssid and security key as the router and voila.

WPA/WPA2 on a home device implies WPA-PSK yes.

I was hoping it would be as simple as I was thinking.

Just didn't want to tell the teacher to buy it, spend out over £100 to find out it doesn't work then can't really return it as it's been opened.

Cheers
