2 different organisations, 1 Active Directory?

Hi

 

Are 2 different organisations allowed to share the same Active Directory, even if they are totally separate businesses but owned and run by the same organisation?

What do you mean by allowed? They can link up in any way they choose even if unconnected. As long as they're both satisfied that they aren't going to muck up each other's dta, privacy and whatever...

 

It seems a very strange question. Two schools in the same MAT might share a network for example

Yeah sorry, I wasn't that clear. I mean allowed from a license perspective? The 2 organisations aren't part of a MAT.

 

Tech support is provided by one guy who does both sites.

Licensing would have to be entirely separate for legal reasons definitely, no two ways about it. Nothing stopping them sharing an AD, although I'd probably go down the route of a domain trust if they wish to share resources etc (licensing allowing!)

Not necessarily. Two schools in one trust may be OK. It very much depends. Given that both are within the same organisation, there may be no obstacle

I would imagine that if the software is licensed to the MAT then the licence covers all those within the organisation; whereas if the license is for a specific school then it can't be used across the MAT.

This sounds right. Its the same as when an LA licence software for their schools so all of their schools can use it, but if an individual school licences some software only they can use it.

The same could apply to two businesses within any umbrella organisation. These two do belong to the same parent company

Exactly, the answer lies at what level of the organisation the licences were purchased and who they apply to.
