tech_guy Posted March 15, 2016 Posted March 15, 2016 A friend upgraded his laptop from Windows 8.1 to 10 and now he has the infamous kerknackered Start Menu issue: No problem, I thought, I'll sort it - but no - none of the 'fixes' or workarounds work and now I'm stumped. The interesting thing with this machine is that you can't even create another working user account - when you try to log in for the first time you get an error message stating that the profile service isn't running... ...and the 'fixes' for that don't work either. I knew I hated Windows 10 for a reason. I've told him to copy all his work and use the recovery partition on it to put it back to 8.1 Any advice before he does this? I've tried everything I can find on the internet, as I say.
Arthur Posted March 16, 2016 Posted March 16, 2016 I've told him to copy all his work and use the recovery partition on it to put it back to 8.1 Alternatively, copy all of the work off of the laptop and then do a clean install of Windows 10.
xlandhenry Posted March 17, 2016 Posted March 17, 2016 A clean install always fixes things like this. The system was probably already messed up before you upgraded.
ZeroHour Posted March 17, 2016 Posted March 17, 2016 Any old AV software running? A lot of older stuff had issues with Windows 10
GuyJD Posted March 17, 2016 Posted March 17, 2016 At this point since the official windows 10 release, I think I've done somewhere in the region of 100 Windows 10 upgrades and out of that 100 I've had one that had issues and that machine always had issues on Windows 7 too, like has been said get him to back up the data and do a clean install and all will be fine.
