HELP URgent hyper v disk space

help - race against time

My virtualised server is creating a avhdx file that is taking all space up on the physical drive.

Over the weekend all hyper v servers on this physical server paused as it ran out space.

By shutting down some machines and moving them off got servers running.

Had to restart virtual file server.

But now space is going down rapidly - i can only think we have accidently created a snapshot - - no option to cancel in hyper v console.

Tried - create checkpoint then cancel create checkpoint but space still running out as avhdx increase!

How can i stop it?

Don't want to shut down this server as it is our main file server!

You got a secondary host for live migration? Any kind of action like that normally merges them back too

not done a live migration before - this uses move from hyper v?

Questions - will the machine shut down after i do a move?

Not sure whether I have enough space - got another host with 2.18TB free drive but this is not enough for the data disk and the avhdx disk?

Reading the original post, is there a snapshot against it?

 

This is pretty normal if it is, you'll have to shut it down (or save it) and delete the snapshot to re-merge it, I don't think there's any way around it.

A move is literally that. It sets up the server at the new location and removes it from the old. Tends to lose network connectivity for no more than five seconds when I've done it.

Surely a live migration will only migrate the VM, the storage (that's running out) will still be in the same location?

 

You can migrate storage but I'm fairly sure that again that requires the VM to be shutdown.

thanks for advice - have managed to get enough space to keep going and have found a snapshot showing so will try and delete it at the end of the school day.

Panic over for now - not a good way to start monday morning

Also learnt a bit more about hyper v - did a live migration on a test server ok but not sure I would like to risk it on file server with 2TB storage.
