Server upgrade mid term

Wonder if anyone is crazy enough to do this.

 

I was planning on redoing our network over summer.

Currently one server (dc/dhcp/dns + part file server) 2 NAS boxes, 70 pc's lots of ipads. Ranger 7

The server contains all the user profile and home directories. The NAS box is all the school shared and teacher shared drives.

 

 

In my head I would get a new server visualise it, have one vm and dc,dhcp,dns and another as the file server,printserver,antivirus host.

The plan also is to limit staff space to 10Gb and also impose quotes on shared teacher drives etc. None of the work is going to be transferred by me the staff are to be responsible for taking off the work that they need from the old server and to organise it on the new server themselves. This is what the Head wants as there is stuff from 2006 currently taking up space that is not needed. So they want a fresh start.

 

My plan was staff get all the data before summer. I do this over summer and when they come back new system in place for them to use.

I'm assuming that all 70pcs would need reimaging to get rid of ranger and to get on the new domain.

 

I have been asked if this can be done sooner?

 

I'm guessing I could get the server set up without having to take the network down setting up the new users and shares?

 

But then to do the computer migration and getting the users to the new domain would result in downtime?

Depends how quick you want to do it.

 

When we're doing the pre-work for any migration in the background there's no reason you can't copy all their files etc across, setup folder permissions etc, and then one day just bam switch user paths and it's good to go etc.

 

Just need to remember to do a re-sync (robocopy etc) to get any updated files across.

 

Obviously things like DNS/DHCP can implement two to replicate and then disable one later etc etc.

 

It's more the re-imaging etc that will take the time, but then that could be done slowly, like 5 a week etc So no major issues while they build

 

You mention new domain, but any reason you want a new one? Can't you just re-use the old one? As if anything that's what will cause most faff

Domain Am I OK to use the old one? School.local I thought it was best to go with a new one?

As above, do you really new a new domain. Keeping the same domain is going to be so much less faff.

 

Personally, I would do something like set up the new server, create a DC to replicate the existing stuff from the first DC. Then you can migrate the services as quick\slow as you want\need. When you are done you can remove the old DC.

 

Also, I would never run with just one DC, I like to have two to ensure you aren't in trouble if you lose that DC.
