So, after extensive testing... And checking/re-checking settings...

It turns out I forgot to press "start recording".

I r teh smrt.

Was good that the stream was lagging out. HDD has a 40 minute test video, Twitch got 18 minutes.

Le EDIT: in case it didn't end up in the stream, the "Mystery Game" is happening.

Next Friday @ 8pm... It's "Mystery Game" time.

I'm still not telling you what it is. :p

Officially moving my streams to 9pm.

I keep getting held up when I'm trying to do it at 8...

Also, triple-post feels bad.

Owww, :( understandable though, thanks for the update. :)

It's really annoying telling someone that you're working from 8pm... And then they get under your feet, making you late.

Thanks again, now waiting for the Tuesday upload... then the Mystery Game on Friday :D

Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday (stream) for Souls.

Mystery game is probably going to be Monday, Wednesday and Friday (stream).

...and Sunday is a day of rest video editing.

I can't believe how bad it went today... I hate Capra.

I was planning to do Capra and the next boss... Then get to the entrance of Bad-Game-Land.

But I'm so salty right now. Stupid dogs...

Oooo, ok then sounds like I have something cool to watch every day of the week then... well except Sundays. :)

My dog sends her apologies for those horrid dogs, and to cheer you up, here is a cat dealing with calls in a call centre... :)

Possibly... I have a feeling that I may end up with not that much usable footage from today's stream.

A lot of it is probably getting cut...

May have to do another stream before Wednesday so I can have something for Thursday.

Great YouTube channel, interesting game insight, funny comments, very enjoyable to watch.

Haven't checked it out yet but will do. I had a go at gaming vids on youtube awhile back (https://www.youtube.com/user/MrDuranis) but honestly it is really hard to get going now when there are so many channels. It also didn't help my cause that my voice sucks and is boring as hell to listen too :).

If you want to get traffic you need to:

  • Have continuous content being released.
  • Don't post long videos. I have a friend that has actually got a pretty good following going and even he doesn't post videos over 20 minutes as people just wont watch them.
  • Keep intros brief, longer than 5 seconds people get bored and click off.
  • In the same vain as above assume every viewer has extreme ADD and make sure that there is some new "thing" every 50 seconds or so. If something takes more than 50 seconds to explain then don't bother.
  • Make sure you are posting on the latest fad game at the time of release (probably The Division at the moment though its a little late for that already).
  • Pimp the hell out of your channel, post on any vaguely related forum, post on any reddit subforum where it fits. Use twitter and facebook and just spam invite people as friends. You will be surprised how many will accept. This is slightly under hand and in no way fun but honestly your game videos will not make it into the first 10 pages of youtube search results or ever be in the related videos unless you already have a massive channel or you are playing something really obscure that nobody else is covering. The only way to drive new traffic to the channel is external links.
  • Work with other youtubers and cross promote. Record co-op commentary and post on both channels encouraging your current subs to go to the other peoples channels. If you have 4 youtubers with 40 subs each and they all manage to convince their subs to check out the others that's potentially 120 new subs.

It is surprisingly hard work. The minecraft and factorio videos I made were around 20-30 minutes when I finished them. This was normally edited from around 3-4 hours of footage+time it took to think up the thing in the first place+time trying to promote it (which I didn't do as much as I should) and it is very time consuming. I kind of gave up as though I really enjoyed it I just couldn't be bothered to spend what amounted to a part time jobs amount of time into something that was only going to be viewed a couple of times.

If you are going to do it then do it because you enjoy the process, not to make money and not to get a million views. Honestly it is pretty heartbreaking to spend a ton of time creating something only to be greeted with a resounding "meh" :)

Mine is 7 seconds. I seem to have more faith in humanity that you do... :p

I'm not doing scripted stuff... That's a really lame [and dishonest] way of doing things.

Eh, I'm not really into bandwagoning... Plus, it's expensive.

It's also a good way to be "that youtuber". Just like [big name youtuber] is the guy with horrible fans that spam other people's videos.

I've watched your videos. I like them. I'm new to watching people game.

Mr Pete has a youtube channel and you have to work really hard to get subs. As Duranis said you have to spam social media and add loads of gamer people. Eventually people start contacting you to team up. Pete has been contacted by quite a few other golf vloggers and he has done some teamed up stuff. He's also been contacted by clothing companies and stuff, asking him to check out their range and whatnot.

If you are prepared to put the work in, you can get a lot out of it. It does take a lot more time than first expected! Give yourself subscriber targets too. Say you want 50 subs before the end of May and hound social media.

Those are my tips. I think the little funny text bits you put in are great too. Those are what will keep me watching anyways :)

1 video every day, Monday to Thurday.

That is awesome and some games are easier to do that with than others. On the flip side of making sure ytou do lots of content though also make sure you dont get burnt out on it which is also really easy to do.

On the flip side, I watch a lot of stuff around 30 minutes.

I'm aiming for 20 - 30 minutes, seems about right for a LP.

I regularly watch 30 minute-1 hour gaming videos. If you speak to a lot of youtubers though about their viewing stats most of them will tell you that videos over 20-30 minutes get less views and even a lot of them dont have 100% view rating (i.e 20 out of 30 minutes is watched as they skip the beginning or end).

Mine is 7 seconds. I seem to have more faith in humanity that you do... :p

Yeah lets have this conversation again after you deal with youtube for 6 months :). Honestly 90% of traffic for gaming videos is driven by the 10-20year old demographic and teens and kids generally wont hang about. If they are flicking through new channels you have about 20-30 seconds to hook them before they will move to the next one.

I'm not doing scripted stuff... That's a really lame [and dishonest] way of doing things.

Doesn't have to be scripted. Just edit out any long bits that are not relevant and make sure you don't have any dead air in your videos.

Eh, I'm not really into bandwagoning... Plus, it's expensive.

Yeah it sucks but it is also the only way your videos will get shown in youtube search results. Pretty much every game that has been out for more than 6 months will have thousands of videos already created about it. All them videos will have more views then yours and a lot of them will come from bigger channels so will all get put in search/recommended results before yours does. The only way to get in the search results for gaming videos on youtube is to not compete on the videos there are already thousands of until you have your channel built up.

If you can get out good content for a new game before every other youtuber is flooding the results with the same content then you have a chance of getting in the search results and attracting new subs.

The other way to get a chance of being shown in search results is to play something more obscure that has a largish following. For example Kerbal Space Program, there is a guy called Scott Manley who has a pretty big sub base purely from playing this game. I personally really like his videos but I know for sure that if a lot of other big youtubers were playing this game and putting out content for it all the time he wouldn't be as successful. There are a couple of people that are making blood bowl videos as well that are the same. If you find a game that has a big fan following but very little presence on youtube then you have more chance of getting more traffic coming in via the youtube sources (related and search results).

It's also a good way to be "that youtuber". Just like [big name youtuber] is the guy with horrible fans that spam other people's videos.

Yeah for sure don't be "that guy". However there are a lot of reddit threads for youtubers and there are a lot of gaming forums, a lot of which have areas to post your videos. There are lots and lots of places where it is acceptable and often encouraged to post links to your content. You "just" have to go out, find them and then constantly maintain them. If you can build up a good rep in the communities you are posting in (outside of your "here is my videos" posts) it will help as well (though is very time consuming and may not have as much return as having posting links in 20 other places). Creating a popular youtube channel is pretty much the same as creating a popular web page. Its all about SEO and generating traffic. Yes you need to have good content to but the best content in the world doesn't help if nobody is finding it.

Use the analytics to see where your traffic is coming from and look at the viewing information for each video to see if the content is working. If people are watching till the end you are doing ok. If a lot of people are watching 20 seconds and that's it then you either need a bigger hook at the start or there is something wrong with your tags/traffic source and people are coming to your video expecting something else (check the tags and traffic sources for that video). If people are watching about 2/3'rds of each video then consider making them a little bit shorter.

The way youtube displays search results is based on subs, likes, comments and "view-ability". If two people put up similar videos and have similar subs, likes and comments then they will be ranked by the percentage of video watched. If only 50% of your video is being watched youtube doesn't consider it engaging content and will down rank it VS a similar video with 70% watched. This is another reason why I suggest keeping intros/outros and dead air to a minimum as people will just skip these bits. Youtube then see's these videos as not being so engaging because they dont have 100% minutes watched and therefore it is harder to get them videos into the search and related results.

That's almost impossible when you just start out.

It isn't if you are realistic. Yeah a 5 million sub youtuber is not going to want to work with you. However that guy that is creating awesome videos like yours but only has 30 subs would probably be happy to work with you. Then that guy with 100 subs might be interested in doing something with the 2 of you and now all 3 of you are working together to cross promote your content.

I have next to no subs and haven't released a video in like 6 months at least but still get PM's from people who want to do co-op cross promotion stuff. There are a lot of new youtubers out there that are in the same boat and cross promoting is an easier way to get your stuff in front of potential new subs.

All this advice is coming from having tried it from quite a long period of time and chatting/working with other guys that have been doing it for awhile (ranging from 10 sub guys up to 10-20k guys). I only gave any of this "advice" because you mentioned you want to make money from it and if that is the case then this is part of what you have to do. Being successful on youtube now is only marginally about content, its mostly about marketing, SEO and traffic generation.

If you are doing it purely for fun then seriously ignore all of this and NEVER look at the traffic or video viewing stats. :)

Dark Souls was probably a bad choice for my second LP... :p

Also, SEO is the devil. It's giving me a headache trying to understand it.

For anyone watching the LP... I beat Capra off camera.

I did record it though. I got footage of it for if I couldn't do it on stream.

But then overwrote my capra-alive save with the capra-dead one... Instead of backing it up. :(
