fiza Posted March 4, 2016 Posted March 4, 2016 School I look after had a power outage over the weekend. When everyone came back on Monday they reported the internet as being down. I was able to connect in using teamviewer so it wasn't the connection to the net. Everything seemed to be ok. I contacted their GfL who said it wasn't an issue their end. I checked DNS and everything seems to be ok. Nothing untoward in any event logs. As the day went on web pages started loading and eventually everything was back to normal. Next morning, another call, same thing. Again I connected in and poked around and eventually it all started working again. This is the 5th day now that web pages wont load in the morning. We have a virtual DC/DNS/DHCP server and one physical DC/DNS server. The physical is an old Dell T110 and I suspect that it didn't like the power outage. I rebooted it and when it came back the web pages started loading again. Now I don't know whether it was coincidence but it seems to point to an issue with the T110 but I cant see anything in the logs to pinpoint what the issue could be. Any pointers? If it happens again on Monday morning I am inclined to switch off the T110 and leave it off to see if the problem reoccurs the next morning.

I would do an nslookup on both the T110 and the virtuals erver, make sure they both connect fine outside and can lookup websites. I reckon the DNS is failing on the T110, and it is also the first server that clients are using to resolve the web sites. It is failing to do it but is trying hence no Internet, if it was off then they woudl use the 2nd DNS server and there isn't an issue. 1

Nslookup returns IPs successfully for google.co.uk, bbc.co.uk etc at the moment. If it fails again on monday I will try nslookup again on both and switch off the T110 to check the theory.
fiza Posted March 4, 2016 Author Posted March 4, 2016 Which of the two servers is the first DNS server? How can I check which is first? In DHCP option 6 they are listed as VM 1st and Phy 2nd purely because the VM IP address is .21 and the phy is .24.
