We're looking at moving across to 365 in easter, but I'd like to trial it with some students first.

 

We only have our school's domain, which is setup with the onsite Exchange server. Is there any way I can setup the MX rules to go to either/both? Or can it only be one/the other?

 

Don't want to make any changes and take the entire system off!

i believe so its called a hybrid setup iirc though not done it

If you have Exchange 2010+ onsite, then hybrid should work (and makes the transfer from onsite to o365 fairly seamless) - I did this last year, and aside from some fun with firewall rules and the LA, worked beautifully. Edited March 2, 2016 by Willott

And advice - firewall rule wise requires ESMTP (not just SMTP) as TLS is required for the hybrid mailflows

If you only want to test it with some students you could simply buy a new domain name for a few £s and then add it to your Office 365 tenant.
