Wearable tech

Hi ,

 

Just wondered if any of you allow primary children to have wearable tech ? We've started seeing a couple of vtech devices.. not sure what they do yet...

 

But wondered if anyone had stance on them - e.g. policy? not allowed? allowed? if allowed what rules? etc....

They're being put in the same category as mobile phones and cameras. If seen taken to reception and collect at the end of the day

I will add that smart watches and wearable devices are a safeguarding/child protection/discipline problem waiting to happen in schools

Currently no rules on wearable tech, the students here are allowed their mobiles as they are used in various lessons with apps etc. Most also have their school emails on their personal phone.

I think they are just toys on the wrist that can take a bad photo.

How do you know if they are using it for school use or not?

 

In lessons only allowed their phones out if teacher says so, teachers let us know if the believe they are not being used for school use, jump on smoothwall, see logs, kid gets slap on wrist (not literally), done

Policy shouldn't be based on the particular fad of the day, it should be based on functions that you wish to be regulated. So have a camera policy, a phone policy, a personal device policy etc etc. That way when the next thing comes along you don't have to jump to make a new policy, you look at your current policies and can say "It has a camera and our camera policy says all cameras should be handed in/not come into school/are ok". This way you are ahead of the game before the game is invented. If the school's stance changes, then you update the policies and that can be done in good time, rather than too late or because of a knee jerk reaction.

so are all the phones on wifi?

 

Yes, we are a private boarding school. When we set all the students up with logins etc we connect them to the wireless (they have got another wireless network than staff)
