Windows 7 POS Software

Does anyone know if we as a school can purchase Windows 7 POS from our software suppliers?

 

We have had a quote from our cashless catering supplier and they are wanting a small fortune to upgrade the Memory by 1gb and upgrade the system to windows 7 - something we can do in house i reckon.

Yeah we have the same issues, they want a lot per till.

Too right they do. Full windows wont install on them either. The Ram upgrades arent a problem ive nearly done these already.

 

The last time i put POS7 on, be it a demo, i couldnt get their system to run so im thinking they might have added a bit more code to but we have had our reval unit replaced with a win7 device, i guess it runs the same set of files. I couldnt get the till software, you know the one that has all the items on.

Yup same here. We have the Toshiba ST-10 tills we are thinking of using touch screen monitors but the sticking point is the rear display to show users their balance.

Same tills as us then, except a lot of our tills seem to be stuck together with duct tape now. To be honest the software itself seems clunky and old as well, so not sure how much better new tills would even be.

 

We need to have wifi on one of ours tills to, which adds to the fun and games. Apparently when Cunninghams installed the network cables (2 of them) they didn't do them properly and they simpyl don't work, so much so thast they gave up and put wifi dongles in them.

Well, it looks like we cannot buy POS licenses so.. i wonder how Cunninghams are getting round it.

 

Unfortunately we cannot get hold of POS licences because they are embedded.

We can quote regular upgrades but you would already need an OS on the tills you have.

 

Are they breaking MS's agreements?

I've just installed (be it, its taken nearly 2 hours) Windows 7 on the ST-A10 till. I've done the 1Gb RAM upgrade and used a different HDD so we still have the old one to fall back onto. At the moment, its using about 10% CPU and about 22% RAM but this is without Sophos installed on it.

 

I would like to install a SSD but the hardware is that old it wont detect a Samsung Evo 850 128Gb Drive.

Windows 7 installed on the till with the touch screen working, till software, fingerprint and impact working. Just need to lock it down now.

Windows 10 doesn't work great on these tills even with 2Gb Ram and an Samsung Evo 840 SSD Drive.

We're using small form factor desktops with touch screens in all our cafeterias running Meal Magic for the POS. The desktops are all strapped to the carts and run off of wireless. I haven't tried it yet, but there is an iOS version of the cash register software as well. The server piece I have running on a 2008R2 VM. It's probably one of the least headache inducing things I have to support.

Not really very helpful but we replaced the whole catering system at my old job as cunninghams wanted close to what you could probably win on the lottery to do simple upgrades or add additional stuff.

We sourced around other suppliers and ended up using a company called LiveRegister, they were considerably cheaper to replace everything than cunninghams was to do simple stuff.

 

May be worth a look if you're ever looking to replace equipment.

Interesting.. I made that same call today and i am waiting for some prices now.

I to anticipate this being substantial though so i need to carefully consider my options..

 

The two i have are New Tills, or upgrade current tosh setup.

 

I could probably do it myself in all fairness but its interesting to read what other have done.

Just to update this thread. We have done an in house upgrade with our tills to Windows 7 (our own version) installed on the Kingston V300 128Gb Drives. Setup the same as Cunninghams had it but a little more configuration with Group Policy. The kitchen staff seem happy with them. All good over here.

Yeah it was simple to do. Install Windows as normal and create a D: for IMPACT files. Go to the Toshiba site, download the ST-10 drivers and install them all otherwise the till software doesnt work. I found the ELO drivers for the touch screen. Locked the system down with a local guest user and group policy.

 

Im not too sure about support. We only pay for software support rather than Hardware. We have an OVS agreement so rather than paying to install Windows on them we put them under our agreement. If the hardware fails, we use Ebay to find parts which are much cheaper than what Cunninghams charge. At the end of the day, the till system could be run on anything, i was thinking of a windows tablet but ran into a problem with the customer facing display.

I asked them earlier and was informed support would not be covered. But that said, we only have software support anyway. We relaxed the kitchen computer with one of ours though and that's supported. Surely it's just the same. I'll double check tomorrow. With budgets tight, every little helps

Same as us too. We interpret software support as their impact ans biostore software. We have a back office kitchen office machine which is the school's and the software works fine on that.

Hm I'm confident I could get the tills to the position they are at now but with the hard wee and os upgrade. Food for thought there.. No pun intended
