3rd party iphone screens cause Error 53

Not sire if this has bren posted before but thought id post it as some of us do iphone repairs. I guess we need to start buying official iphone screens, lets hope it doesnt apply to ipads.

 

One way of findibg out is looking for the apple logo on the ribbon cable on the screen.

Edit.. hang on a chow! Is this just related to the home button? If we transfer the home button which we should do, will we still see "error 53".

Seems to be linked more to the TouchID part:

 

We take customer security very seriously and Error 53 is the result of security checks designed to protect our customers," Apple said in an official statement to The Verge. "iOS checks that the Touch ID sensor in your iPhone or iPad correctly matches your device’s other components. If iOS finds a mismatch, the check fails and Touch ID, including for Apple Pay use, is disabled. This security measure is necessary to protect your device and prevent a fraudulent Touch ID sensor from being used. If a customer encounters Error 53, we encourage them to contact Apple Support

 

Basically a security code links the chip + button, so if one is replaced it goes amg haxxxx disable!

The way I read it was that if the touch ID system recognises any unauthorised (read: non-apple) then it locks itself down. Justification for this is apparently a designed feature to stop a modified screen or other component from accessing system data or doing a MITM on the touchID system.

 

It won't affect iPad repairs as much, because unlike the phones where the screen and glass/digitizer are replaced as an assembly, it's quite common to replace just the glass and not the LCD on an iPad and this apparently doesn't have the error 53 'feature'.
