Open source or free video editing software?

Looking for some video editing software. At the moment the kids are producing stuff with Movie maker which is pretty basic but has done the job. The teacher has asked me to investigate something with more features on the video editing front.

I know Virtualdub which seems to be mostly concerned with AVI files although other filters are available. I am also looking at Jahshaka.

 

Can anyone recommend any that they have used?

The only other thing I can suggest other than what you've tried is what I use, Kino. You'll need a Linux machine, or at least a LiveCD though.

VirtualDub is a tool for us geeks (I know because I've written filters for it) and isn't a real user editing program (very handy for converting or enhancing poor source material e.g old VHS tapes pre-processor before converting to DVD).

 

My most savvy video editing ICT Co-ord uses Ulead VideoStudio and quite like's it.

PS for cheap and easy converting AVI's to DVD look into a program called DVDSanta (really - that's what' its called!)

If you want a free version of what the professionals use - Avid Free DV.

 

They invented the Preview/Programme/Timeline setup

There's not a fat lot in friendly, free video editing software beyond Windows Movie Maker (or iMovie on the Mac). Adobe's Premiere Elements (ie slightly cut-down version) is only about £35 per seat in ones, less in bulk, but for a suite of machines I'd be loathed to fork out for it.
