talksr Posted January 29, 2016 Posted January 29, 2016 It was a month ago that a user came to me with a mac which had suffered water damage and now I have another. This time it is a: Part No: FE684B/A 13.3 - inch Macbook Pro Model No: A1502 RFB MBP 13.2/2.4ghz/4gb/128gb FLASH-GBR This is newer than the past 2010 model and as such, I believe it is entirely flash based in terms not only of RAM but an SSD. I have not had a chance to open it up yet, but she said she had taken it to the Apple store (it was a refurb) and the quote they gave her to repair it, was more than the price she paid for the item when she bought it direct from Apple as an authorised refurb! Although we don't have any pictures to go on yet, does anyone think it is worth looking at or should we just bin it or keep it for spares? It doesn't turn on or show any signs of life.
NB9457 Posted January 29, 2016 Posted January 29, 2016 Everything is soldered on the board in the new Macs, so there really isn't much salvageable at all. Could strip it down and clean it with isopropyl alcohol, see if it works, but I'm guessing the damage is done. On the plus side, they sell for decent money when they're screwed on the bay, but there's also the fact your data could still be on there, so bin it may have to be! 1
elsiegee40 Posted January 29, 2016 Posted January 29, 2016 Remove anything you can, open tne CD tray. Stick it in a warm airing cupboard for a week and then try again. It's always worth a try 1
GuyJD Posted January 29, 2016 Posted January 29, 2016 We had a similar thing with one of our teachers, I told her it was probably dead because she had tried turning it on while it was still wet but after leaving it in a warm dry room for a week or two I was pleasantly surprised that it turned back on and seemed to function just fine. 1
VeryPC_Colin_M Posted January 29, 2016 Posted January 29, 2016 Stick it in a HUGE bag of rice... A+ to this 2
talksr Posted January 29, 2016 Author Posted January 29, 2016 Haha very funny! Would like to get the back off to help the drying process, but....ah what a surprise, it takes ANOTHER screwdriver I don't have. Looks like a P something or another. Star shaped but missing one star tip. Got to love Apple.
difinity Posted January 29, 2016 Posted January 29, 2016 Needs cleaning before drying. The impurities in water are conductive.
elsiegee40 Posted January 30, 2016 Posted January 30, 2016 Needs cleaning before drying. The impurities in water are conductive. Ideally, but the cleaning options are usually limited. With good luck, it will recover enough to back up and maybe even last a while
difinity Posted January 30, 2016 Posted January 30, 2016 Ideally, but the cleaning options are usually limited. With good luck, it will recover enough to back up and maybe even last a while Ultrasonic cleaning is best followed by a dip in alcohol to repel any left over solution, but Alcohol and a brush will do. Just sticking in a desiccant is a bad idea due to water not being pure.
