Removing A Disk From DPM With Data

Hi All,

 

So we are running DPM 2012 and have 4 disks in our storage pool, we want to remove one of these disks but it has quite alot of data on it. i have read that to remove the disk you need to first remove the protection group to where the disk is being used and then remove the disk? But then how do i transfer the data over? So all in all what i am trying to achieve is to successfully remove this disk from the storage pool and transfer its data to another disk in the pool.

What's the end game?

 

Are you replacing the disk and is it in a raid?

 

We only have one large storage pool so I am not sure whether this will work

 

If you delete the protection group retaining the data. Then recreate the protection group choosing a different disk does it not transfer the data over or will it reconnect back to the same data partition like it would in our single storage configuration

I am running DPM 2012 and in my storage pool i have 4 disks , 2 of these are physical the other 2 are Synology and Qnap NAS via a ISCSI target. What i want is to transfer all the data from the Synology on to the QNAP (which is 100% free) and then remove the Synology. How do i go about doing this?

You can do this through powershell. depends how comfotable you are with using it. this maybe of some help though

the ps1 scripts it refers to is located C:\Program Files\Microsoft System Center 2012 R2\DPM\DPM\bin

 

never had to do it before myself but i know of people who have successfully.

do you know if there is a GUI version to this?

Not that I am aware of. I recently just got rid of 2 dpm servers as I consolidated them in to one brand new one. Never had the issue destroying data as I held the old servers for a month whilst new backups were created. Sadly you don't have this luxery. The only alternative would be to delete the protection group deleting the data and then recreating the group on the new disk.

However this is a huge risk as you lose all backup protection.
