RM Maths won't install, config.nt

I have RM Maths installed on about half the PCs in the ICT suite, but it just won't install on the other ones. I get this error message

 

config.nt. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose Close to terminate the application.

 

I've googled and it suggests copying a config.nt and autoexec.nt file from the repair folder. We don't have a repair folder but I have tried copying them from PCs where it is working and it isn't making any difference.

 

All the machines were created from the same image, so I'm really not sure what else to try.

 

Anyone else encountered this?

Have you tried running the program in compatibility mode? What does it do then?

 

Have the school considered RM Easimaths? Online version. Much easier for us techs!

OOh, hadn't heard of that.

It looks like it will cost us £600/year as we have over 250 pupils, but we only have about 20 that use it, so I don't think that's going to work unfortunately.

 

But have had no end of bother with RM Maths so that would definitely be the easiest option.

Oh, and compatibility mode doesn't make any difference.

Might be worth giving them a call and see if you can go for a cheaper subscription?

We have RM maths too and when I spoke to support they told me that it was luck rather than judgement that gets it to work on Win 7 as it isn't made to do so and we should upgrade to easimaths.

I got it installed on the whole IT suite but some computers - varies as to the day and time - have no sound.

I've just doubled checked and it's working fine on 24 out of 32 computers, no idea what the difference is with the 8 that don't work.

I do like the idea of EasiMaths, I will give them a call in April when we have some budget to work with.

We have started using Mathletics as they can do it at home too. Seems to be very popular!

We're currently on a 2 month trial. If you are just gonna set up 20 user accounts on it you can probably go for the cheapest option subscription wise. We were using Mathletics, but at £5 per pupil it's over a grand for us. Easimaths doesn't have the same functionality of Mathletics though.

its a longshot but ive seen it before with old software. try making sure the 8 being odd have some form of speaker/headphone plugged in and windows isn't reporting no sound output devices ive had all sorts of old (and some not so old) software crash/fail for that reason
