Average Network Traffic

Morning All,

 

For anyone who's monitoring their network traffic what kind of averages are you getting on edge switches?

 

Been monitoring ours as part of our upgrade plans (New core/edge etc), but seems such low traffic on them I'm not sure if that's normal or whether there's something amiss.

 

As an example for a 48 port:

 

 

But yet for our SAN etc it seems to be showing the traffic levels we were expecting:

 

 

Am I really just over estimating network traffic around the network, or doesn't that look right? Even our main fibre links between the 3 server rooms only seem to be using up to 60Mbps (10Gig fibre)

What's the polling interval? Are you using SNMP polling or Netflow?

 

With bursty traffic SNMP is only going to catch it if it's using that bandwidth when it polls the switch, so it looks normal for that. Sadly, most lower end switches aren't going to support Netflow and even more advanced ones often need an additional module or licence for it.

It's just SNMP currently, but I suppose you're right that we should increase the poll, think it's still on 30second default.
