Learnpad upgrade Android version

Hi

 

The Learnpad is built on Android Jellybean 4.2.2 and I'm finding that more and more apps require later versions - at least 4.4. Has anyone tried upgrading the Android version? I know it's unsupported, but the devices will become rapidly less useful if they're not updated. Is it possible to upgrade the underlying OS, but keep the Learnpad skin?

I purchased my first set of Learnpads before Christmas and they are running 4.4.4, I don't know if this is because it is on a new spec of hardware.
