Is there anyway of checking which external numbers have dialed our school on our Avaya system?

Not sure about previous calls but you can setup SMDR output which will throw out in csv format all in/out calls when the server starts.

We use http://davehope.co.uk/projects/smdr-receiver/ but IP Office Installation media comes with DeltaServer which is also uses SMDR to export data to csv
