What constitutes a Managed Server - System Center 2012R2/2016

Afternoon,

 

It's that fun time of year when we renew our EES!

 

We licence the Desktop pack with Enterprise CAL suite, and know we need and have 3 System Center Datacenter licences to cover our DR Host and our 2-Host Hyper-V cluster.

 

Do we need anything for our 'Normal' servers, Physical DC, Management server etc, when they only have Endpoint AV looked after by SCCM or management on them? Do we have to have a SC Standard licence for each of these, or only our Virtual Hosts? Seems silly to have to have a licence for a server to use Endpoint!

 

No where do they actually define a server, and what makes it need a licence, unless I am missing it!

From my understanding and what we were told/licensed you need nothing if you're not using any of the super features:

 

Client Management Suite Client ML

Service Manager

Operations Manager

Data Protection Manager

Orchestrator

 

As the rest is part of the CAL suites and the management server is free. (Obviously depends what you're using)

Just to expand that as I'm sure I'll get a query:

 

The Core CAL Suite is equivalent to the following licenses:

 Windows Server CAL

 SharePoint Server Standard CAL

 Exchange Server Standard CAL

 System Center Configuration Manager Client Management License

 System Center Endpoint Protection

 Skype for Business Server Standard CAL

 

CAL includes SCEP and SCCM management rights, and as it's based on user number (FTE) it's not restricted to how many clients etc.

So I don't need a standard licence for my incidental servers then?
