[sims] Error Whilst importing results to a microsoft word table from marksheet

I'm having the same error multiple times at what seem like random intervals and am wondering "there must be a reason to it"

 

Whilst creating a report, I have used the table function within Microsoft word and am importing the details from the SIMS marksheets using the "add-ins" and then "result" function. All information links up correctly apart from some boxes which simply show the macro formula for the import. But the macro and aspects chosen are correct and should function correctly.

 

Is there a reason why this happens and can I fix it?

What you see on the report table is a tag not the macro itself. Sometimes macros get corrupted but the tag doesn't reflect this. Its like having a box with 'working TV' written on the outside and inside the Telly's all smashed up. Simplest fix is to delete the entire contents of the affected cells and put the results in again.

If you mean re-enter the result on the effected cell in the Microsoft word table? if so, that makes no difference as the problem will repeat itself.

Have you tested to see if that's the case? As I said the tag and the macro are not the same thing so by deleting and replacing you're not necessarily putting the same thing on the template. Ed

I have and it unfortunately makes no difference, It seems that the cell I'm inputting the result add-in into is doing it to other results not just this one, so it seems to be a problem with the cell, I've looked through the formatting of the cell and can't seem to find a problem (or any differences from the other cells in the table) but it's still this cell that causes the problem.. weird

That is really strange. Is it a big table? It might be to do with page breaks-are the cells allowed to flow across 2 pages?

Yes and yes, the room required for the actual imported information is really quite small but since the scripts to bring the information in are rather long, and having 8 columns per line means that it needs as much room as can be given - maybe 9-10 pages of flowing cells. Its just frustrating since I can't find a reason, if there was one, then fine; but nothing...

I've frequently had this issue and the fix every single time is to either delete and re-enter the result tags for the affected cell or ALL the result tags.

or sometimes like now, a cell has pushed its content to the next throwing the whole table out of sync - could it be anything to do with the version of word I'm running? - otherwise deleting the result tag wont do it for me, i have to delete the whole table and start again doing row by row and saving until it goes again

deleting the contents of the tables has always fixed it in my worst case scenario.

 

Also, are you aware that the "verify tags" routine can screw it up?

is it at all possible to change the option of using publisher instead of word since i'm pretty sure the error is with words messed up way of dealing with tables.

Try just deleting that row.

Or even that cell then adding one back in...? But cell movements could cause the layout to go funny, in fact editing rows sometimes throws the column alignment out by a pixel.

 

When a tag used to show up, it would normally be all of them, and the fix would be to close the template without saving, then save when prompted.

If it's not too big a template a verify might actually show you the issue.

Try clicking the pilcrow symbol to see the underlying code, you may find that even when you have emptied the cell, there is still some underlying info in there hidden.-----> ¶

 

Edit: that symbol shows paragraphing and other hidden fields, i have it in my custom menu in office, but you'll have to find it hidden in a menu option for formatting somewhere.

Are we talking about Individual Report in assessment manager?

 

If so this is a problem I have become very familiar with. It's like a slightly annoying member of my family now. If not, maybe the same logic applies as it concerns word tables.

 

Capita have a long list of things you can try to fix it. The only one that has worked consistently for me is to turn off the 'allow row to break across the page' so that no row is breaking across the page when the tags are visible. Or if it doesn't matter to you just don't allow any row of the table to break across the page.

 

If I'm completely missing the point I'll just go back to sleep.
