Has anyone had this issue:-

I use Redstor Remote backup to backup our servers. However Redstor is unable to backup the critical system state folder C:\Windows\WINSXS\ Redstor skips 74 files in the folder and then next evening it seems to automatically exclude the whole folder.

The error is:- "failed to read security descriptor" on each failed file.

I have tried using Windows Server Sytemstate backup to backup the C:\Windows\WINSXS folder to a local NAS drive, But this gives also me an error see below, then windows cancels the whole backup!

Error below:-

Error in backup of C:\Windows\WinSxS\amd64_eventviewersettings_31bf3856ad364e35_6.3.9600.16384_none_e5b63811d7aa2a76\Event Viewer.lnk during read: Error [0x80070005] Access is denied.

Do I have a permissions issue? I am reluctant to mess with critical system files as I am not sure what these files do. The Server is a DC.

I am concerned about this issue because I understand that I shall need this folder backed up in case I need to restore system state data after a complete server failure.

The Winsxs folder is linked to Windows Updates, so I wonder whether it's linked to a file or service preventing the backup from completing?

You could try temporarily disabling the Windows Update service and see if this clears it. Also, I presume your server is up-to-date or are there pending updates/pending reboot? What's the uptime of your server?

Thanks for your replies. Windows server backup features is already installed. Windows update service (wuauserv) is reported to be stopped manual (triggered). I don't know if that is normal for the windows update service. The server does automatic update without problems. The server was last rebooted on 31st December. I have got LINK2ICT to look into this problem as we pay them for the REDSTOR remote backup service. They are struggling to diagnose this one.

The Windows Update Service is normally running by default. I guess the next thing to check are the event logs and see if anything is reported in there.
