Do you know, I'd almost forgotten about that...

Is there any chance of nudging the DfE again in light of this new push (however "new" and however much of a "push" it turns out to be)? "Well, what you're asking for would be so much easier if ... etc" and all that?

To be honest, I think it might be best to see if folk who go along to UKCCIS could raise it there?

A few years back BSI spotted that work on standards around this was needed. They pulled together a raft of stakeholders and tried very hard to get things moving on it it.

It fell down due to a few areas.

1 - the DfE would not sponsor or fund it in any way. They allowed 1 meeting to be held in their offices, and support was from ex-Becta staff ... but the response was that if bodies and the industry thought a standard was needed then the market should pay for it.

2 - It is difficult to persuade suppliers to fund and adopt a standard if you can't show competitive edge as a result.

3 - the main direction on public outcry at the time was home use ... and we saw the fun that has been had there.

There are also some very interesting legal questions that are raised about the responsibility and liabilities involved in monitoring and the supply of technologies for use by pupils / students. That needs to be fully thought through but it is hard to get the discussion on that going too.

Yes I remember this too Tony. I was in several meetings with BSI and representatives from lots of stakeholders, many of whom sponsor on Edugeek, and the DfE, and we offered to be part of the sponsorship of getting the BSI standard implemented, but it went round and round in circles with people really out to protect their own interests and it ended up moving away (if I remember right) from a standard on filtering to something altogether different, and then just ended when the total sponsorship/funding (about 70K I think) could be raised. Would be great to get this going again, maybe this time with some actual DfE sponsorship given the governments own requirements rather than the commercial companies having to pay for it.

@exa_mark If we can catch up about it at Bett? I'll see who is about from UKSIC, etc too? I still have stuff on DarkWeb I was looking at that needed some more discussion so I think it can fit into this agenda now anyway :-) Edited by GrumbleDook

Hi Tony,

Yes absolutely, I am down at BETT from Tuesday to Saturday night (as usual) and we are on stand B160 just to the left of the N4 entrance, I suspect you will struggle to miss our stand ;) so just give me a shout whenever your free and we can grab a drink and a chat.

See you next week.

Mark
