Home Use Program query

I was under the impression that staff at schools were entitled to home use of Office provided the school had a valid OVS/EES agreement and in the past have installed Office for staff using the MAK keys provided in VLSC. I got an email about Office 2016 now being available on the Home Use Program (HUP) and follow the instructions to set this up but I find when staff follow it they can 'purchase' for £9.95 the Office package? Does this mean it is no longer free home use for staff?

 

The T&Cs also make it clear they can only use the software whilst they work at the school and the school has a valid agreement so it isn't even as if they actually 'own' it?

The home use program has never been free as far as I remember.

 

If you have OVS you can get Office for free for students and staff via Office 365 but its not part of the home use program.

 

Giving staff the MAK key would be breaking the licence agreement and will land you in hot water.

It has never been free as far as I know - so if you were giving out copies on a MAK key - you may be in violation of your licence. The licence on the HUP is between the staff and Microsoft so while the licence is only valid while they work at the school, you have no obligation to police it.

you're thinking of the work at home benefit, the Home use Program is for staff to purchase their own copy to install on thier computer, there's some info on the work at home part here https://www.microsoft.com/uk/education/schools/software-licensing/buying-for-staff.aspx

There's two versions (or were)

 

Home Use Program as you mentioned is paid for, and Work at Home Rights which is "free".

 

Work at home rights allows staff users to use software at home, "free" only media costs but it's for work purposes only

 

Home Use Program is always paid for, and allowed for "non-work" stuff.

 Have users bring in their devices for manual installation by you at a central location that you control using Volume Licensing media acquired from a Microsoft-approved fulfillment source.

 Use a system of controlled short-term checkout of applicable Volume Licensing media (acquired from a Microsoft-approved fulfillment source) solely for the purposes of individual user installation.

But @Steve21 has it right. HUP is paid, Work at Home is part of the Office volume agreement.

Thanks, it must have been the Work at Home rights I was thinking of. I hadn't realized you were supposed to buy specific media to use for WAH though!
