SCCM advice please - for a total beginner and EES inclusion??

Hi, I see on here a fair bit SCCM mentioned. It seems it ticks a lot of boxes.

I';ve always been interested in looking into it - just never really found the time / wanted to take the plunge!

 

I'm currently using Avast Business Anti-virus cloud and hate it! I gather (from what I've read on here) that Endpoint is part of SCCM? I'm thinking this could be a better solution.

 

Also I use a rather old FOG setup for deploying images. This has seen better days now, doesn't want to update and could do with going. SCCM would I'm assuming be a lot better for OS deployment?

 

Does SCCM also take the place of WSUS?

Will it manage third party updates and deployment such as Adobe?

 

We have less than 200 devices, would SCCM be overkill?

Is there a lot of daily maintenance?

 

Does it ideally need its own server?

 

We have EES and are due for renewal. I believe SCCM is part of EES - which 'product' would I need to purchase? Currently we have the bare minimum, not even the Desktop complete package as we do not really need it.

 

And lastly, how long is a piece of string - sorry I mean what is the timeframe for setting SCCM up?

In short answers,

 

WSUS can be replaced with SCCM yes, but you can leave it standalone if you wanted to.

 

You can deploy all applications from SCCM, but that's not linked to WSUS that's the software/application deployment part of it

 

There's no real maintenance once it's setup it does its own thing until you change something

 

Deffo needs it's own server imo, (can be virtual), but it does a lot of processing/SQL etc so needs some hardware behind it

 

Licensing wise it is the normal desktop pack (so the same as Office/Windows etc).

 

And in terms of setup that depends how much config/changes you want it to do. You could spend weeks putting thousands of bits of software up, and just do a few and migrate across slowly.

 

Again do you want 1 standard AV policy or different to different users/devices etc etc

There's 2 ways to do it (client or server side) but for Education/EES works out much better to use client

Hi I have SCCM 2012R2 and have around 200 devices, the AV works well and I use it for WSUS and pushing out applications. I have it on a dedicated server (VM) running 2012R2 as it can be quite intensive on the hardware. I use MDT for images but MDT images can be imported into SCCM although I have not ventured into this yet. I have an EES and it was free as part of that, I did not need to specify anything extra that I recall. I am installing it in a test environment at the moment and its quite involved but I guess you could do it in a couple of days but I am taking my time to get it right.
