Plex and live TV

Hi guys.

 

A friend of mine is moving into his new house in a few days. He is wanting an all in one media server including films etc. I know Plex is fine with that.

 

Now he is wanting to get channels on Plex via the network. The plan of action is to install one freesat Arial to into the loft and be able to stream the channels from plex its self. Anyone done this and know what hardware/software is needed?

 

We dont want to go down the BBC iplayer route as the bandwidth isnt great where he lives (New build)

 

Alternatively. Is there some other free server software that can do this to run along side of plex?

 

The client devices are Samsung smart TV's.

I did some research on this a while back. Plex doesn't have PVR as an option and won't allow you to watch LiveTV over it's client or server app. He will need a separate box connected up to the TV if he wants to stream the live channels via PVR there are no apps on any Smart TV's that will allow you to do this as far as I'm aware.

 

Your best bet would be to set up a small media server using a Nuc and mount this behind the TV. Get yourself a USB remote control from the likes of eBay and install Kodi onto the box. Connect Kodi to your friends shared area where all his movies and media sits so that can be streamed over the network and then setup DVBViewer (I recommend this as the EPG integration is good) on your friends Server and enabled that in PVR add-ons on the Kodi client.

I use Kodi (not 100% needed for this) and TVHeadend for this. I have a small netbook in the tv cabinet with a usb DVB tuner. I use it to stream and record TV channels. Usually I stream them onto my iPad when someone is watching something rubbish on the main TV. Or used to playback recorded shows on the main TV.

Have a backend device recording/streaming the TV channels and a client device to watch on. If the TV has CEC then I'd suggest a Raspberry Pi with Kodi installed; you can use the dpad and media buttons on the TV remote.

I used to have this setup but I found when I turned the TV off it would also shutdown the Pi and stop recording etc. Ended up using the netbook and bought a cheap IR receiver and remote.
