Satellite Pro R50-B-12N OCZ Vertex 460A UEFI Install

This unit doesn’t support Win 7 installation within UEFI. The only way you can install Win 7 will be through CSM mode. The reason behind this was because we didn’t implement a UEFI Legacy option until the Broadwell chipset range and the unit in question was an earlier model which has a Haswell chipset.

 

Win 7 needs video IF support to boot by using interrupt call Int10 which isn’t provided within the standard UEFI versions as this is no longer required to boot Win 8 onwards.

 

I have spoken to the BIOS team and enquired about having the UEFI Legacy option added to the Haswell chipset as this option includes Int10, but they have advised I would have to raise a post sales change request which will incur a cost in the region of £10,000 as they would have to rewrite the BIOS. This is not something that Toshiba UK is willing to pay for since there is an option to install Win 7 under CSM mode.

 

Sorry as I can appreciate this is not the news you wanted to hear. I thank you for being so patient but I have pushed this as far as I can with Toshiba Japan and I believe we have come to the end of road. I would like to point out that all the units that have a Broadwell chipset of later have UEFI legacy mode which will allow you to install Win 7 64bit for any future purchases you are considering.

Seems these laptops have been purchased at the wrong point in time, and that laptops purchased slightly later with a different chipset could potentially use UEFI with Windows 7. Ouch.

 

Thanks for all your advice and suggestions on this thread everyone and to everyone at Toshiba who kindly looked into this with me, it looks like UEFI will not be implemented for these devices until we upgrade to another operating system (Windows 10 is now starting to look tempting).

 

Alternatively - Anyone got mad skillz with making your own custom BIOS and fancy a geek-out session? XD

im trying to get windows 10 on an ssd on one of these awful laptops. At first it wouldnt boot into mdt with the ssd in so put drive in another pc and diskpart cleaned it. It now boots into mdt fine but even though bios says there is a drive there windows says no drive found any ideas (it blue screens booting from my win 10 pendrive) tried uefi boot/csm boot seems to make no difference

Sounds to me like you potentially have missing drivers in your MDT boot image? Have you got the Toshiba drivers for the chipset, and the hard drive controller drivers imported into MD? If you have done this, have you re-generated your boot image? (just a hunch)

yup. shoved a random 500gb hdd in changed nothing else and it installed fine just wont accept an ssd that the bios finds

What version of WinPE are you booting into?

Almost certain it's somehow driver related if that is the case, as the device works on another system, but isn't even showing in diskpart.

 

Have you tried taking a look with something like this? Does it show a HDD as an installed device, or any devices without a driver installed? -> Alternative to device manager of Windows

 

(Not used the above before, advice found here : https://community.landesk.com/docs/DOC-23264)

ive given up. I cant see how its a driver as with no alterations its sees hard drives just not this ssd so its now roicling a 500gb hdd instead of an sdd for now

This is the closest thread to my problem I've found anywhere, so maybe someone can shed a bit of light for me..

I have a Toshiba Satellite Pro r50-b-12p win 7 pro running a bit like a dog..

These were downgrade 'in the box' with windows 8 options.

Decided to replace the hdd with an ssd so took disk out and cloned using a disk bay and paragon.

Put SSD in - 'please insert system disk' error .. put original hdd back in - same error.

I've booted the machine from USB win installer to verify that disk can be seen (yep it can - so cable / pins okay).

 

Now for the weird one - took the original disk out of this satellite pro and took it to another school that I could get in yesterday - put the disk into another toshiba satellite pro r50-b (different number at the end - I should have noted it!). That machine booted okay with my disk in.

Took my disk out, put that one back in works fine...

 

I'm missing something to do with security / safe boot / uefi but I don't know what - anyone have any ideas?

Spent this morning trying to upgrade one of these to Windows 10 (and putting an SSD in it while upgrading the OS), and had exactly the same problem as you.

 

Reading here and forums elsewhere it's clearly a bug with UEFI in their BIOS.

This is not something that Toshiba UK is willing to pay for" - what a joke this reply is. They're effectively saying "we sold you something that doesn't work, it's going to cost us money to get it repaired, we're not paying it, so that's tough luck on you". Great customer service skills!

 

I inherited this laptop from a previous IT tech. I wouldn't buy Toshiba kit if you paid me. Reading this response just reinforces my view of them.

have just come across the same issue:

rebuilding 2 x R50-B-12Ws side by side (PXE/WDS). Both have SSDs and have been previously built by me using the same system, though was probably a Win10-1803/9 image and now am using 1903.

One built fine, booted to desktop, the other started PXE booting again on restart after the build.

I did change both BIOSes at the start, added a supervisor password, changed them to UEFI mode. The SSDs are different models, but its the Kingston A400 that is not playing ball.

Swapping the SSDs, the laptop that didn't boot from SSD now boots into desktop, whereas the laptop which did work then didn't. So the problem followed the SSD (Kingston A400).

The SSD that worked is reported as R3SL120G in the BIOS

Laptop that worked initially with that SSD is BIOS version 1.30 and EC 1.10. Secure boot disabled, UEFI Boot on.

The laptop that failed...only difference was Secure Boot was enabled.

Re-PXE-d the laptop with Secure Boot off. No change to the issue, on first boot it PXEd again.

 

Ran DISKPART, cleaned disk (removed GPT *). Re-PXEd, same problem.

That's interesting. We nearly always use Kingston drives, so it was very likely that my issue above was with the combination of Toshiba's dodgy bios and a Kingston drive.

 

We have a couple more Toshiba's hanging on in one of our school, once those are dead/replaced, I hope to never see one again for the rest of my days!
