Short throw projector

Hi,

We are thinking of replacing some of our projectors (4yr old Saharahs. Silly to be replacing them but they are fuzzy at the best of times!). We suffer severely from ambient light (Victorian building).

Noticed that Short throw projectors have taken a recent price cut (from £3k to £1k). Anyone used one?

I've found BenQ MP771 - £819

Tosh ST20 - £1200

Hitachi a110 - £900

The Tosh has it's own cantilever, which should reduce instillation costs. Anyone had one installed? What sort of cost was it?

Up north, £650 gets you a new projector moved to a new position so don't worry about the short throw issue

It's long-throw ones we need. We have a load of SVGA HP projectors that need replacing. The bulbs are more expensive than a Hitachi XGA projector. However, they are mounted some way from the screen and I have yet to find a projector that will cope with the distance. Moving the projector is a big problem because of asbestos.

Yep its the lack of long-throw thats causing me the most grief.

 

Luckily, not come across any asbestos (fingers crossed).

 

Just to clairify any case we are talking cross purposes...

 

Old projectors mounted long distance from screen - if you replace with new projector - the image cannot be reduced enough in size to fit onto whiteboard - yes?

 

(I could maybe get away with the other way around - you'd just have a smaller image on the screen )

It has to be said, that its like Christmas for the teachers when their old dim, VGA projector that can be only viewed on Dec 21st with the lights out is replaced by a 3 billion lumen (turned down to 1200 for safety reasons ) XGA one :)

That's it exactly Simon. I was able to move one mount forward because they had mounted it on a beam. The others are mounted to wooden plinths fixed to the asbestos ceiling tiles. With hindsight, we would have had bigger plinths fitted. A specialist company put them up over a weekend. They built decontamination chambers in each room which included a shower unit. Must have cost a fortune. I'm told you can get lenses that will adjust the throw but they aren't cheap either. Maybe the answer is the very short throw jobbies that are mounted above the IWB.

We're replacing many of our HP projectors. We've found in Some situations a Toshiba X2000 will. There's also a compact NEC model we've had some luck with.

 

One of our suppliers has recommended the Tosh T95, they claim it's got such wide range it can be used to replace almost any other projector (havn't tried one yet).

i helped our contractor yesterday to move a projector and because it's a new school and the ceiling has lots of holes in it we just moved it forward... dead easy.

 

I've been told stories about some of the older schools where the ceilings are really high or full of asbestos... i thought that they had cleared that out now? thought it was illegal or something?

Asbestos is apparently ok as long as it's not disturbed. I'll have a look at the Tosh projector. Thanks for the advice.

I don't understand - why not worry about the short throw issue?

I WANT short throw, it the long throwness (have I just invented a word?) that, I think, is causing our issue. As we have high ceilings, we either have long drops from the ceiling (which causes wabbly projectors) or cantileaver. The advantage of the Tosh ST20 is it has it's own cantileaver on it. I was wondering if that made it significantly cheeper to install.

 

It seems, however, it doesn't! For the ST20 our current projector people say we won't get much change from £2000! (£1300 for the projector)

 

Does anyone have any experience of these projectors. Is the ST20 worth, the extra £400 they're asking for it?
