Where to put a member server in AD heirarchy??

I have recently demoted our old Viglen server. It was just lying around doing nothing, and we have had the new domain set up and running for over a year now.

 

Now I have demoted it, I want to put it onto the new domain as a member server so I can maybe use it for additional backup or storage. But I'm not sure if it has to go into a particular place in the Active Directory heirarchy on the network, because it is a server and not a workstation. I don't need it to be able to do anything fancy. Could it just go into one of the workstation groups? Is there likely to be anything in a GPO that might cause problems for a server that wouldn't affect a workstation?

That's where it goes by default, when I first add it to the domain, yes?

we have a folder on the same levels as the dc's called servers. We then have all workstations and users in a folder named after our school. If you have gp for your workstations that you wont want a member server to receive they need to be well away from your workstations.

I really hate myself for feeling that I have to point this out, but 'technically' the computers 'container' is not an OU! It behaves slightly differently and IIRC, it's not possible to apply group policy directly on it. For this reason alone, I've always created specific OUs to contain member servers' computer accounts.

Don't hate yourself. It's always worth pointing out the obvious where I'm concerned!!

 

You have actually confirmed my suspicions. When we had the old Viglen classlink setup, new machines always went into the Computers holding place when first added and then had to be moved to the correct place to work properly.

 

So I need to create a new OU and work out some GPOs to apply. Should be interesting...
