Infrared repeater & wall mounted remote

Hi,

 

We have some issues with remote controls going missing occasionally. I've just had an idea to solve this.

 

Wall mount the remote and use an IR repeater to control the projector/device.

Do edugeekers think this would be feasable?

Makes changing the batteries a chore.

 

Someone (I might remember who) makes a simple wall mounted switch panel, then a wire up to the ceiling, and then IR on to the projector.

 

Found it. Like this, 1st one I found and it looks pricey. Sure I didn't pay that!

There are various options like what @Andrew_C has mentioned. 2 I would suggest are the SP Controls Pixieplus http://spcontrols.com/prodcat.php?hierId=32 and the Kramer RC plates Kramer Electronics - Product Search

 

Again neither option is 'cheap'. If you would like any advice or costings on any let me know.

I've used both solutions and the keene one is pretty fragile...

 

If they really are going missing, and depending on where the equipment is, you might be able to use one of these... Remoguard Not pretty, but very useful. It's designed for projectors and TVs as it has a mirror to bounce the IR to where it's needed.

Thank for all your suggestions. I wanted to avoid the full blown control panel setup due to cost and complexity (stuff to go wrong). Like the Remoguard but bars going across seem to interfere with actually pressing buttons. Like the mirror feature though. Will have a google to see if there is something slightly different to the RemoGuard.

Just out of interest, Unicol will make you a standard remoguard either with no bars or bars configured to your requirements for little or no extra charge, or for an increased charge will make you one to your exact sizing.

@Oaktech Do you know if the remoguard mirror works well or is it hard position it correctly so the projector picks up the IR signal? Have you any experience of using them? Guessing this depends several factors such as remote IR transmitter strength, IR receiver strength and line of sight/ambient light issues. Would only be buying for the hall initially but if they work well would get them for all 25 classrooms.

I've not had ambient light issues worse than you would get with the actual remote. They are not difficult to set up, and they are ideal for classrooms. I used them for a suite of work/seminar rooms at a university. Depending on the size, for a hall I would consider combining a remoguard with a keene extender

It works just fine, the only problem I've had with it is that it is not the most robust thing in the world - plastic casings - if it is put in harms way.
