Can I disable RADVD on my router?

Good morning all,

 

I'm currently looking at reducing traffic across out network and on of the things that's appearing on our Wireshark logs is:

 

Now from what I can gather this is related to RADVD that's enabled on our router. We don't use and ipv6 onsite and the router is the only place I see anything related to ipv6 that is enabled. However, I'm unsure of what the consequence would be if I were to disble it.

 

Any advice as always is greatly appreciated.

That's a Router Solicitation, which is sent by a host when attempting to locate an IPv6 router - it will be sent by a workstation, printer etc.. The only way to remove these is to disable the IPv6 stack on your edge devices.

 

If you aren't using IPv6 then you can disable Router Advertisements on your router (ie by disabling RADVD) without any problems. However, if you don't have IPv6 addresses assigned to any of the router interfaces it won't (shouldn't be) sending any RA's.

I had disabled it at the time and it made very little difference. My main issue is getting the wifi AP's VLAN'd. However, I don't have enough managed switches for this and the school won't give me the dosh!
