A working party formed in 2005 after the publication of the Checklist of the British and Irish Basidiomycota has been increasing the number of common English language names for our fungi.

There are over 1,600 scientific and English names here [organised alphabetically by their scientific name] Some of the English names are quite memorable:

This list has been compiled for the most part by working alphabetically through CBIB (the basidiomycete checklist) with additional suggestions as they have occurred. It would be good to at least get the British and Irish basidiomycetes named. Many of these are unfamiliar species and the proposed common names have been largely based on the relevant scientific name – a column explaining the thinking behind the name is included for interest. Comments on any misinterpretations of the Latin or Greek would be welcome as would opinions where more than one name is offered. Comments will then be reviewed by the working party who will make a final decision on the accepted version. These names will then be added to the list of recommended English Names...
