GPOs over WiFi not applying (Windows 10)

I just wanted to add what will hopefully be an answer to others still struggling with this in 2021 and beyond (as this thread came up in my search and the internet lasts forever)!

 

Also having been through most of Google (well the first 2 pages anyway) searching for an answer and feeling a little like this...

I tried the things on the previous pages and had no luck (UNC, wait for network and Slow Link detection - the UNC thing being frowned on as a poor security practice incidentally).

 

I had a few (mainly laptops) quite simply refusing to actually install various bits of software, everything accessible and permission ok (as verified by the computers that did install it).

 

GPUPDATE /FORCE recognised there was something to install and told me it needed to process before start-up or log-on, so I did the restart.... NOTHING!

 

Check event viewer only to be told that it either 'couldn't find the file' or that it was waiting for a restart... GOTO 10...

 

Anyway, what finally fixed it was this in the GPO:

 

Computer Configuration > Policies > Administrative Templates > SYSTEM > Group Policy - Specify startup policy processing wait time = 120 (seconds - default).

 

BAM! Everything installed... It didn't seem to add 120 seconds to the startup time, I just think that is the max it will wait for everything to get done.

I feel your pain.. Wifi and group policies are just a complete pain.. I did away with group policies for wifi devices , took them off the domain and just made an image for wifi devices that applied all the settings that I wanted to apply. They run great now instead of running like dog poo.
