So... The server has now been up and running nearly 3 months. I am starting to think about a reset.

What do people think? A reset with a switch to the expert mode in Infinity? Or, how about we go a bit more PvP and use FTB Trident? Could be fun, building up some bases, then shooting each other... We could split into a couple of teams, have a "no mans land" and have a truce period of a couple of weeks or something like that. (Main world would have borders, and main bases must be in the main world, else it'd be silly).

Just thinking about it at the moment... Gonna be a little while until I do do the reset. :)

Gauging people's thoughts on what we should reset to really!

Well I'm up for it as I've hit my bored-now stage, so the reset would get me coming back. But a lot of people have a lot of stuff they've worked hard for, whereas I don't have a massive amount.. Soooo..

I think what would be good, would be to team up in pairs on a new world.

Either PvP/Normal (If PvP, with limited damage perhaps?) and those pairs can be either chosen randomly (everyone is assigned a number and two are picked together) or called out. Then they work together to survive. As a result of having two hands on the job instead of one, use a more expensive pack/increase difficulty.

It doesn't even need to be a PvP-centric pack. We could just run infinity, with PvP turned on. I certainly think having clear teams would make it interesting with the options of trading/deception/diplomacy etc.

I'd like something goal orientated. e.g. including the Hardcore Questing Mod (HQM). I recall the original skyblock pack had HQM + a multiplayer map so people could run it on a server. If there's a more up to date pack that's similar that would be my choice to run.

Also TerraFirmaCraft is always a giggle.

Didn't realise this MC Server was still going. Must admit, I've been really thinking about coming back to good old MC.

A mate of mine had a server which we and a few others spent a lot of time on it. I got a bit obsessed to the point I build around 8 large cities, a few dungeons (1 that took about an hour to complete on Survival) few outposts, paths to them all (all lit up) and of course the surrounding areas on all of that was tidied up.

Okay.. I miss the game.. who do I need to kill to get back on a server? Is this Survival or Creative?

Ok, I have settled on a choice of 2 packs for the reset! AT Launcher - Revolution 2. HQM based, rotary craft based (so different overall), or Silvania - can be whatever we want it to be, has an economy built in, and levelling up.

So, which one of those 2 do people prefer the idea of?

@mthomas08 - PM me your minecraft username and I'll add you to the current server and send you the details, but don't get too hooked as I'll be resetting it soon. :)

I've installed them both (I used the 'recommended' button for the optional mods) and I will have a play. Based entirely on the descriptions, I prefer Revolution 2.

@localzuk Oooo absolutely thank you :)

I will wait till the reset though, assume this is Creative? I can be.. very carried away once I start...... after all it's like virtual drugs.

I was a mod on a fairly active set of minecraft servers for quite awhile. The problem is always the same. The fun is in setting things up and once you got everything running "all" there is left to do is build. While that is fun it burns you out on the game really quickly and you end up with 1 or 2 people working on massive projects (which never get finished) and the rest just drift off. Having gone through about 10 modded server resets it normally only has a 3-4 month lifespan before everyone is completely burnt out on it, less if you are using the same mods in the next reset. Economy in pretty much any minecraft server is pretty pointless to be honest. It is even more pointless in modded versions where pretty much everything can be produced on mass automatically. This is especially true with the newer mod packs where rather than having to have lots of interconnected systems from different mods working together you just chuck down some multiblock item and call it done.

Couple of suggestions for making things a bit more interesting.

Expanding world boarder. Make the world really small to begin with so resources are limited (and some that are biome specific are not available at all). This also encourages people to work together at the start as there is not a lot of room for everyone to go out and set up their mega base. Every X days increase the world boarder by X blocks. If you do this you also want to disable any other "dimension" generating stuff. This extends the life a bit as people build temporary stuff and then move as new areas are opened up which keeps it interesting. Not everyone will like being limited at the start though.

Nerf any "easy" big power production. The most fun I have had playing minecraft with back in the FTB beta pack. There was no easy way to make power or transfer it around and you had to get creative about making big power production. Rather than chucking down a big reactor and tesseract I had to build boilers, find a way to create and transport the fuel for them and then get that power out to the machines. I spent weeks working on lots of interconnected systems just to get a massive, stable power supply going where as in newer mod packs I can do the same with just 1 multi-block structure. If you play with the config you can nerf the power production of the easy to make and maintain power generators and increase the production of the ones that require multiple systems to keep running.

Nerf any item that you can place and forget which generates lots of useful items (i.e. quarries). When you can get infinite resources you never have to worry about working around not having them. When Yellorium is super hard to get though suddenly big reactors are a lot less useful and other power generation mods become an option with the big reactors being used only when you need a massive short term power boost.

Hope that may give some somewhat interesting ideas. Sorry it turned more into a rant about modded minecraft not being as good as it used to be but I guess I kind of miss it :)

Mod packs are starting to catch on to these problems now, with the likes of FTB Infinity Expert Mode requiring much more effort to do things. I have already been considering disabling some things in the new server already - giant power generating objects being one of those things, tesseracts and dimensional transceivers being another. I want to see people build things that take real design to run.

There would still be plenty of automation, but I want it to be "maintained automation", so that you have to do something to keep it going. Set and forget leads to where I am in this existing server - unlimited power, pretty much unlimited resources (need iron? build an RFTools dimension filled entirely with iron blocks).

I was setting up a server years ago that used a few bukkit plugins.. The overall theme was there were two teams, red and blue, who each had their own bedrock 'vault' to live in, and the other team couldn't get inside. Vaults were small though and had limited storage space, so you were basically forced to leave once you'd gathered resources. In the centre of the map (spawn) was a town, protected but ruined. In the middle of the town was a nether portal. Teams had to fight at set times to gain control of the portal, and only the team controlling it could travel through. 'OP' items were untraceable and pre-placed in the base in the nether. Unfortunately the server never got off the ground, but there's always fun things to do if you start looking at mods individually rather than pre made mod packs.

Sounds fun but not my long term preference for Minecraft. I'm more a non stop builder, once I finished a project I start another and it continues. Then I link them together, underground cart systems, passage ways.. ugh.. the more I think about it all the more I seriously missed it...

Hell I'm the type of person that would build a world size of the Ocarina of Time (loved that game) just for fun... and yes I did have a water dungeon which was large too..

Memories!

The main reason why I haven't got back in to it is finding a server where I can build a TON or spending hours just trying to find a spot just to die and unable to find that spot again...
