Sheridan Posted October 7, 2015 Posted October 7, 2015 We're got a fair few ipads here now, but I doubt we're looking at any kind of 1:1 ratio anywhere in the future, more like departmental resources. However a regular question is why we can't use Google Drive on them for our GAFE accounts. I've explained that as one user devices it means you're relying on the previous user to logout but this isn't sinking in. I've tried using Google Drive on an ipad but I gather its not even proxy aware, as I get a Network Unavailable as soon as I try to sign in? Is there anyone else out there using GAFE and ipads? They do seem at odds with each, Chrome IOS doesn't work with HTTPS inspection, Safari is pants and the Drive/Gmail apps are desgined (naturally) for single user devices!
CyberNerd Posted October 7, 2015 Posted October 7, 2015 We have over 150 ios devices on the network and are heavy GAFE users. These are all BYOD though and as you say they are designed for single user. If you want multi user then get chromebooks, many of which are tablet too.
Sheridan Posted October 7, 2015 Author Posted October 7, 2015 Yeah this is the problem with a lot of schools -they want iPads, and only iPads. iPads are the way to show how progressive you are! We tried a Chromebook with our wireless and smoothwall but it had a few issues - although we use Windows notebooks they're not seen as the 'right' device to be using!
boomish Posted October 7, 2015 Posted October 7, 2015 I know iPad's are a pain to sign in & save stuff but I feel no more than our laptops especially for the year 3's, and the child experience is far greater and much more intuitive. We haven't had iPad's long but they have been so much better received than a traditional laptop or Chromebook, using fiddly trackpads on kids so young always made me feel sorry for them, a tablet seems easy to them. If we can get Drive to work well at least all the students data is separated, we've always had problems with them saving to general class/year folders.
edmokeski Posted October 7, 2015 Posted October 7, 2015 We've done this on both shared and 1:1 iPads. As you say, the app is designed for 1:1, so it works great in that setup. It's a pain for shared b/c the previous user never logs out, the student saves into that user's account and their work "disappears," etc. And Google don't even make it easy to sign out. (I mean, really, how hard is it to put a "sign out" button somewhere useful?) I'm not familiar with any of them, but I know there are some 3rd party apps for accessing Drive out there. Perhaps one of them has a big, red "sign out" button that would make it more useful in a shared setup?

Having multiple untrusted users is a niche environment and not exactly recommended. 1

Fair point but it's fairly obvious for users of Google Classroom, where it might be common for multiple users on one device, as previous poster put, a simple sign out button would be a big help.
howartp Posted October 7, 2015 Posted October 7, 2015 I've not got as far as setting it up yet, but in AirWatch (MDM) you can apparently set devices as multi-user. We're going to be using this for our loan iPads whilst student scheme devices are being repaired. The theory is, you sign into the Airwatch app on the device (using AD credentials) then it "sets up" the environment for that user; when you hand back the device you sign out of Airwatch and everything is reset ready for the next user, quicker/simpler than the wipe-and-factory-reset Apple approach. I don't know if it works with things like Drive, signing in automatically, or whether it can do the force-sign-out but not sign-in, or not at all, but we'll be playing with it in a week or two. Peter
howartp Posted October 8, 2015 Posted October 8, 2015 I was actually having confusion with google drive. How can I access my friends file through google drive? They've have to share it with you, or make it public and send you the link. Peter
