Failure configuring Windows updates

Got a friends PC which will not boot fully into Windows, it just sits at failure configuring Windows updates, reverting changes, do not turn off your computer. It had been like this now for 3 hours and I am having no joy. I have tried a system restore with no luck.

 

Any suggestions on a fix and not to wipe and start again (yet).

 

Got the data off but ideally want to get it running, not one I've come across before over the years.

 

OS is Windows 7 Home Premium.

How many updates was it 'trying' to install?

Does the hdd light blink away to tell you that it is doing something??

When did you attempt to restore it??

Did you interrupt the update-reverting process to perform your system restore?

 

If I've seen this thing before I've tended to just leave it alone, and it may well take hours to sort out, but... the nightmare of trying to bring it back to sanity after interrupting the revert process isn't worth the trouble.

See if it's still like that in the morning, then boot into the Recovery partition and run the MS diagnostics... (+chkdsk, +sfc )

I have no idea it doesn't say.

 

It was handed to be in this state, someone else has had their hands on it and told my friend the drive has failed, clearly hasn't though.

 

Chkdsk repaired a few things, SFC is now running. Will boot it and leave it whilst I am at work today and go from there.

I've seen similar with Windows 8.1

 

My solution was a System restore to a point before the updates installed, then upgrade to Windows 10. Sorted!

There was only 1 restore point from Avast but no joy with that either. Will see what tonight brings.

Right update, left it running and its booted into windows. Cleared out windows update folder and its been fine. Ran disk check which has found errors but kept going. Went to take a Clonezilla image and it failed numerous times, finally got it to clone today onto a new drive. Everything works fine on the old one, just think the drive has some bad sectors that cannot be repaired. Have had the system on for over 48 hours and no issues just kept working.

 

New drive in, cloned and working, cleaned up machine and its now 10 times faster. Random one, never come across before.
