I read that this can be done using RENDOM but how much of a risk is it? Our domain was named by a 3rd party and it's not a full domain name, "campus.schoolname" not the full "campus.schoolname.co.uk". We are now looking at getting SSL for our parent portal and obviously cannot purchase an SSL for this part domain. Is it best to match the school website when rename, if we are brave enough.

Yes it is just for the SSL certs really but would be nice for it to be right, although the SSL certs are the priority! How could i use DNS to get around the issue, never dealt with external SSL certs before.

Its not actually recommended to have your internal domain name the same as your external. It can create all sorts of issues.

Current recommendations are to have your internal domain as a subdomain of your "full" domain. So, if you've got "schoolname.co.uk", then your internal domain should be something like "corp.schoolname.co.uk" or similar.

The reason you're advised not to just use "schoolname.co.uk" is that you end up with Split DNS - ie. you end up with an internal DNS server handling things for internal addresses and a different one for external. Can lead to confusion and problems.

Using fake domains is inadvisable also, as you never know if ICANN will end up making your choice of tld a real thing, and sell off your domain to someone else!

It is possible to rename a domain, but it can and will break certain things - SCCM, Exchange and probably others, can't handle domain renames.

Interested also, some muppet named one of my primary schools with a .local domain which I'm not too amused about!

why is this an issue? I'm not questioning anything, i'm curious as to why.

Bonjour uses .local, so it can upset things if you want to use any Apple gear on the same network.

It's a pain in the backside for most multicast stuff from what I've read. Not hugely worried about it in this instance but I know the school may like to do something with iPads in the future. On top of which it's just downright bad practice. I love inheriting bodge jobs!

Right, so anything that uses multicast dns can have conflicts with .local domains? I did not know this, thanks. A school i am at uses .local and has apple TV on the network (around 6 apple TV and 15 iPads) and haven't had any issues but it's good to know if any issues start cropping up.
