Hello I am having real trouble with the above categories slipping through the net. I have popup blocker turned on all machines and smoothwall filtering in place. I have a group of children that have unfortunately come across some images that perhaps they shouldn't have. Nothing majorly explicit and nothing more than you might see in some of the national newspapers but not suitable for a lesson on types of birds (you can see where it was going I know)

 

any advice on stopping this?

Have you got safe search enabled under content modification? (Guardian » Content modification » Manage policies - 'Force Safesearch') There is also a google specific one (Enable Google Safe Search [beta]. Probably best to have both these enabled for all or just students.

Sounds like you're doing searches and this leads me to believe that it's something HTTPS related. When you're doing HTTPS filtering and have a Content Modification policy for Google Force Safe Search, the latter takes precedence. I've had a few customers who were using Safe Search and seeing questionable results. As soon as we've disabled the content modification, there was enough content for the Smoothwall webfilter to be triggered, thus blocking those results.

 

If this isn't the case though, can you be a bit more specific about your setup? Are you doing HTTPS DnI? What's the website or search term in question?

Do you have a record of what they searched for and which search engine they were using?

PM me details if you have them.

Otherwise, I'd follow @simoanorak's advice and add HTTPS decrypt and inspect too, although setting that up can be non-trivial depending on your environment.

they did a search for "black bird facts" we only have swurl lists not guardian lists or anything such as fancy

Which search engine was it? And do you know if you are enforcing safesearch?

it was safe search uk but we dont have any means with our filtering to enforce safe search

I recommend you enable HTTPS Decrypt and Inspect by using the following guide:

Once you are happy that this is working, you can enable any content mods by browsing to Guardian > Content Modifications > Manage Policies. The policy table works in a similar fashion to the web filter policy table. Check our Getting Started videos for info on configuring policy tables:

we don't have access to that we go through swurl.smoothwall.net and its very limiting all we as school have access to is the allow and bock lists for the different ports primary secondary staff etc
