In my experience, it's best (at this moment in time) to leave the Windows 10 Start Menu tiles, as well as the Context Menu on Start 'as is' and use GPOs to restrict/block access until Microsoft properly address these issues in later Windows 10 builds.

You have two choices or you can do both (as I have). Hide the All Apps menu completely for Pupils and Staff, as well as apply AppLocker policies, so even if you search for 'Contact Support', the end user will be blocked as I specified above.

 

I don't see anything wrong with this, as once the end user realises it's blocked, they'll quickly give up and try something else I guess? :)

So you have tiles only and the all apps menu doesn't show at all?

 

Correct - Staff and Pupil users will receive a redirected desktop, just like they have ever since Windows XP :)

I have attached the PowerShell script I used. It should be fairly self-explanatory but if you have any questions just ask. :)

 

It'll be interesting to see whether this script applies to all users or not, and whether (more crucially) Sysprep will still run. Other users on Edugeek have reported that removing/uninstalling Apps breaks Sysprep, which is why I have avoided removing anything and applying AppLocker rules.

It does apply to all users since the app(s) are removed from the .wim offline. Sysprep appears to work fine for me too.

One thing I noticed when testing my script was that if I removed all apps except for the Windows Store and Calculator I could no longer open them after installing Windows 10 from that image. However, if I removed all apps except for the Windows Store, Calculator and Maps I didn't have any problems opening them. :)

 

From what I've seen most Edugeeks have been removing the apps from within Windows itself i.e. online rather than offline. Maybe that has something to do with it? :confused:

 

The method you are using is a lot easier and quicker however. :)

Are you running the script on a Windows 10 PC?

 

Which install.wim are you using? One you have captured previously or an unmodified .wim from a Windows 10 ISO? It's best to use the latter.

 

Also, which edition (Pro, Education, Enterprise etc.)?

I am running it from a Windows 10 PC. The WIM is captured from a Windows 10 PC. I have never modified it before. It is Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB.

Just tried it with the WIM from the DVD media, same thing

I'll do a bit more testing later with an LTSB image to see if I can replicate the issue. My script worked fine with the Education edition. :)

The only thing I'd worry about using a script to remove anything, is future Windows 10 updates may break/fail or even put the change you've made back. At least with AppLocker you're safe as you're only restricting the App.
