Set Chrome As Default Browser Group Policy

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Does anyone know of a way to set Chrome the default browser via Group Policy. I have tried the chrome GPO option, used registry changes suggested on the net but I keep getting this message when opening a URL.

This is doing my tree in!

Any ideas please?

Thanks

Is there anything under Set Associations and change .url to open with chrome.exe? not at my desk so thats slightly wild guess/suggestion.

Is there still a GPO for Folder Options?

In Windows 7 we have 'open with' set in here for IE.

User Configuration/Preferences/Control Panel Settings/Folder Options

Hi,

I am finding this does not work when using a custom default profile or a mandatory profile. Does anyone have any thoughts on that please?

Thanks

Try pushing out the following registry keys Via Group Policy. Tried it in a test environment and it seemed to work.

HTTP - HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Associations\UrlAssociations\http

HTTPS - HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Associations\UrlAssociations\https

Im telling a lie, even if I do not tinker with the default profile, it doesn't work anymore. It did before.

Any ideas please?

The issue with this was making sure the users had modify rights on the XML file.

Actually I am incorrect. The first time a user logs in its asking what browser they would like to use as default. If they log off and back on again it doesn't ask. hmmm

Try this...

AppAssociations.xml (or whatever you want to call it)

plus this GPO...

Group Policy Search

If you need to change any other associations use the command below (after customizing your default apps on a Windows 10 PC).

Dism.exe /Online /Export-DefaultAppAssociations:C:\AppAssociations.xml

Where did you store your AppAssociations.xml file such that Group Policy could find it?

I put mine on the C drive for 2 reasons

1. Works then if a laptop is offline

2. reduces network traffic

On the C drive of each local machine?

On the C drive of each local machine?

Yep. I just set it to copy during the deployment in a Task Sequence step

Hi, did you manage to find a fix for this? Our users are going to have to use local profile due to the issues with roaming and don't want edge to be default as most of their logins will be "first time" to different machines. Thanks

Created a Windows 10 - Customizations Group Policy

Created the .xml file and moved it to Netlogon

Used the create folder option under Computer Configuration > Preferences > Windows Settings >Folders

Used the replace file option under Computer Configuration > Preferences > Windows Settings > Files identifying the locaton in Netlogon for source file and using the above folder location for the destination

Assigned the Group Policy to the OU of affected computers.
