group polices, administrative template issue

Recently I have noticed some strange behaviour on the network that seems to be group policy related.

 

I have two domain controllers. I've checked the GPO's on the main DC and they appear to be fine.

On the second DC, when I look the settings of a GPO all the administrative template settings are in an error state:

 

"An error has occurred while collecting data for an administrative template"

Expected one of the following possible element(s), , , , , , , , but found instead. File \\myDC.domain.internal\sysvol\cloughhall.internal\Policies\PolicyDefinitions\en-US\terminalserver-Server.adml, line 198, column 60

Encountered an unknown error while parsing (error = 0x87400001): -2025848831 (0x87400001) File \\myDC.domain.internal.internal\sysvol\cloughhall.internal\Policies\PolicyDefinitions\terminalserver-Server.admx, line 9, column 41

 

I can create a new group policy but if I try and edit it I get the same error message....

 

Does anyone have any ideas of how to resole this?

It's a guess I'm afraid but have you tried replacing the terminal servers admx template and hopefully it will replicate so that they both have a working copy of it?

OK... On closer investigation I think I'm seeing the problem.

 

The main DC is a 2008 R2 machine. The second DC (with the group policy issues) is a server 2008 machine

 

According to this article ( Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2 and the Group Policy Central Store - Ask the Directory Services Team - Site Home - TechNet Blogs ) There could be an ADMX compatibility issue...

 

I've had these two servers set up like this for years (they were set up by a third party) I don't understand why I'm only starting to see issues now...

OK, for anyone following this : our network is all virtual except for a couple of servers. This was all set up a third party.

 

The 2008 DC with the issue is NOT a VM. I didn't realise that this was the FSMO server... but I guess it makes sense in terms of our VM cluster going bellyup.

 

The other tin server is a 2012 box. I've promoted this to a DC and it doesn't have the GPM problem because, as said in previous post, the issue is with server 2008 / 2008r2 being able to have non compatible ADMX templates.

 

I don't know why this has happened. The only thing I can think of is I updated our Exchange 2010 server to the latest service pack / rollups and that might have done it. In fact I'm sure that that's the case.

 

Now I just need to shift the FSMO role over to the Server 2012 box... also all the VM's are pointing at the 2008 to sync their clocks...
