Database Manager vs Data Manager

Hi all,

 

I've been grappling with how best to gently explain the differences between a MIS or Database Manager (back-end (e.g. SQL DBA & SSRS) role) and a Data Manager or MIS Administrator (front-end administrative role, possibly w/ some data analysis?) (obviously titles vary across institutions quite a lot, which is no doubt part of the reason for my needing to explain!) to some new SMT members. (One of these two roles is one of the many hats I wear, while the other isn't and I've not got space for more hats.) It occurred to me that I must not be the first person in this situation, so I was wondering if anyone out there has a document or knows of a web site that helps to clarify this in any way? Alternatively, if you work in a school/trust/etc. that has both these roles, I'd welcome pairs of JDs!

There is no standard job description for the data manager role. Some only analyse grades, others run vital administrative functions in a MIS. Others may have server access to back-up and upgrade their MIS whilst others could be exporting data from their MIS into a custom-built database ranging from a simple spreadsheet* to a full fat SQL server with or without MIS server access.

 

 

*Yes some schools store data in Excel. SLT love them. DMs hate them.

I did a presentation about the evolution of the MIS job. Basically it came from the old days when it was all done by one person - normally the head of maths - but it's evolved beyond a single person. For SIMS, you've got two clear jobs.

 

Network Manager -> SOLUS3 -> Strong technical knowledge responsible for the physical computer network - is techy

 

Data Manager -> System Manager 7 -> Strong "business" knowledge, responsible for the data, understands the "business" processes and requirements - completes stat returns, does data analysis - isn't techy

 

The network manager basically delivers a working computer network - they install the OS and any applications. The Data Manager configures the MIS to meant the schools requirements. The Network manager makes sure the computer works so staff can take a register for example - they don't care what info they enter into the register, just that they can. The Data Manager cares about what is actually entered.

 

The roles are linked, but they are separate - just like myself and my ISP. I don't expect them to do my work just because they provide me with internet. They are equal roles as well - although the data manager needs network manager to deliver a working network, the network manager wouldn't have a job if the data manager didn't exist (as there would be no requirement for a network )
