aidenbran2000 Posted September 12, 2015 Posted September 12, 2015 SLT want a new website as ours is 5 years old so i can understand it. The SLT member who sorted the last one is looking around certain companies but has also asked if i could do some developing on one. I have got no problem with this and they said don't worry if i don't have time. I want to do it and i have created a wordpress site back at uni so think i will develop it using worpress. Just wondering what would be better to do install a wamp server or buy our .org.uk domain name and some hosting as it will cost no more than £15 for the year. Which one would you say would be better for me to do?
AJWhite1970 Posted September 13, 2015 Posted September 13, 2015 Ours used to be hosted externally but when I rewrote it last year I moved it back on-site on a new IIS server. This means it can be directly edited rather than having to have Contribute installed (the old web masters tool of choice for editing) and it also means some staff can be mapped directly to only their section of the web for editing their stuff. TBH there isn't really a correct answer for hosting, each organisation is going to be different with users, needs, resources, internet speeds etc. Hosting is good for schools with little spare capacity on their own servers, whereas having it onsite (even on an XAMPP box) gives more manageability and flexibility.. lholland421 Posted September 13, 2015 Posted September 13, 2015 We use WordPress sat on an internal iis web server. Works like a dream !
danbuntu Posted September 13, 2015 Posted September 13, 2015 For £15 a year I'd get it hosted as it's out of your hair. I'd only host it your self if you've already got a server you can just pop it onto as a new virtualhost.
